How's Your Hearing?

Millions of children aged 6 to 19 have hearing loss in one or both ears. Audiologists at the the University of Kentucky reported in 2009 that it is the same degree of hearing loss as they see in 60-year-olds. Teens often have the most hearing loss because they turn up the volume of their car stereos so loud that the programming can be heard inside buildings as they pass by. The repeated high volume damages the tiny hair cells in the inner ear that play a key role in hearing.
Wearing headphones and pumping loud music into the ears from an MP3 player has the same effect. Over time, the hair cells begin to die out, and there is no way to restore them. The hearing loss is permanent. Students playing in high school and college marching bands have a similar risk. Indoor rehearsals concentrate the sound. One student quoted in USA Today says that after indoor rehearsals, his ears hurt and start ringing. Now, he hears ringing whenever he is in a quiet room.
Several exciting studies show that, in many cases, certain nutrients can not only repair hearing loss…but even reverse it!  Until recently, the idea of treating hearing loss with nutrients was simply a pipe dream. Scientists didn't think it was possible. Most doctors don't think nutrition has anything to do with hearing loss.
So parents, monitor your children’s listening to music. Remind them to not turn up the volume on their headset or phone too loud. Hearing is precious. If they get in the good habit now of keeping the volume reasonable, they may preserve their hearing for the future. Once you lose your hearing, you cannot get it back.
