News and views on all things organic from BioGro NZ

Welcome to our October Newsletter!

With the weather getting somewhat warmer, we're beginning to make the switch away from woolies and we can't wait for summer! Lots in the news this month, with some restructuring from OANZ and some interesting research surrounding glyphosate. Be sure to check out the handful of awards being presented to organic licensees below.

See below for all the latest, and if you're launching a new product, kicking off a community event or just want to share your story, please get in touch with robyn@biogro.co.nz to discuss. We're always happy to shout from the rooftops and celebrate on your behalf.

Until next time!
In the news
OANZ demonstrates how organics is profoundly simple
Organic Aotearoa New Zealand distributed a simple yet extremely insightful infographic last month, really encompassing everything that organic incorporates. We were also notified earlier this month that Brendan Hoare is moving on from OANZ as they begin to restructure the organisation to focus on his own business development. The position will not be replaced, but instead outsourced to a member of OANZ -Horticulture New Zealand - who will provide administrative support. Hort NZ has been working closely with OANZ over the past 18 months on National Regulation so we look forward to seeing this continued support moving forward.
Organic education in schools
We were thrilled to be contacted by Curious Minds and House of Science earlier this year, whilst they were developing a board game for school children to teach them about growing fruit and vegetables. They wanted to include an organic element to the game, and we were proud to offer our organic certification logo to the kids that decide to 'go organic'. If you are interested in purchasing the game please contact Chris Duggan from the House of Science.
Glyphosate perturbs the gut microbiota of honey bees
A study recently carried out by researchers from the University of Texas at Austin have found evidence that the primary herbicide used globally for weed control - glyphosate - perturbs the gut microbiota of honey bees. The full report is available to read, followed by an array of topical references.
Ceres Organics leading the charge against single-use plastic
Everyone is capable of doing their bit for the environment, and Ceres Organics proves that every little helps by transitioning over to home compostable packaging and shifting away from single-use plastics.
Open Country Dairy focus on organic
Open Country Dairy recently reported strong milk supply, and their organic programme is nearing its first processing date in November after two years of transition on farm. They are expecting their first organic branded product to be on shelves in early 2019 so watch this space.
