Welcome to this special edition of the Healthy Workplace Awards newsletter. Well done to all awardees and thank you to all that came. We hope to see you all again next year!
Bronze Award Levels:
Acorn Academy Cornwall - BRONZE
  • Installed on-site gyms at all 6 regional academies, which are used by both students and staff
  • Started an inter-academy ten pin bowling league with bowling nights each half term, and a trophy for the winning team
  • Trained a Health Champion at each site and held termly meetings to discuss best practice and innovations
Angel Fulfilment Services Ltd - BRONZE
  • Mental health awareness – a huge shift in how we approach mental health, we have so much more understanding now and the positive effects of removing any stigma and judgement are overwhelming.
  • Cultural change – the results of a recent Company Culture survey show that Angel has a ‘family feel’ and is a ‘happy place to be’.
  • Healthy Weight – great results following Amy’s visits, we plan to continue this with healthy snacks and more friendly competitions!
Cornwall Development Company - BRONZE
  • Setting up a lunchtime badminton club, we now have 10 members who play weekl
  • A team taking part in the ROK5
  • Getting more staff taking part in the Get Active Challenge
Halwin School - BRONZE
  • Got people moving more! - pedometer challenges, staff fitness sessions, couch to 5K
  • Raised profile of health and wellbeing- mentally and physically. display boards, training, meetings, staff challenges- all in a fun way
  • Team building and motivation - working together, signposting, use of space in the toilet, half termly focus
The Cornwall College Group - BRONZE
  • Working with the Health Promotion Service and Workways to roll out stress, resilience, mindfulness and keeping well at work training
  • Creating the Workplace Health and Wellbeing resource on the intranet
  • Changes we’ve made to our catering which involve more salads and healthy food options are available, and some unhealthy options have been removed altogether
Silver Award Levels:
Ambrosia Creamery - SILVER
  • Good participation in a company cycling event in September
  • 100% increase on attendance of the "Know your Numbers" Health Promotion in September (from the previous year)
  • Excellent participation in the Walking Day event (approx. 45) in October
Cornish Mutual - SILVER
  • 22 employees signed up for two healthy weight sessions, which enabled everyone to 10 minute (free) sessions with a healthy eating/fitness specialist
  • Bringing in a lot more healthier options at meetings, events and business lunches which has had a really positive reaction from all colleagues and external visitors
  • Getting both offices engaged via the monthly ‘Up for FIT’ newsletter – whether that be by sharing their stories with us or by contributing to the content
Cornwall Music Service Trust - SILVER
  • Increasing the awareness of Health and Well-being to all staff, with individuals making positive changes as a result of information shared
  • Providing all staff with a CMST water bottle to encourage good hydration throughout the day
  • Offering a range of social activities to enable staff to involve their families. e.g. Christmas party, Race for Life and Barn Dance
Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust - SILVER
  • Health and Wellbeing Conference for 180 staff at the Eden Project concentrating on Mental Health with Ruby Wax as guest speaker
  • Smokefree for Staff across all Trust Sites from 1st April 2017
  • Improved marketing and awareness of the Improving Working Lives fund for Teams to access Yoga, Bowling nights, spa days, Kayaking and football golf
Devon & Cornwall Police CIOS BCU - SILVER
  • Healthy Weight Programme - 2000 staff access Tanita Body Composition scales with 80% of staff self reporting making a positive behaviour change
  • Mental Health focus
  • Free EAP app, for all staff to access help and support at anytime
Forms Plus - SILVER
  • Musculoskeletal health – One:2:One assessments by an experienced occupational health consultant through a local physiotherapy practice. The team does mid afternoon stretches each day to move and reenergise
  • Healthy eating and nutrition including bring and share healthy buffet lunches on a theme such as rainbow coloured, a hydration challenge, a 5 a day fruit and veg challenge and a fun nutrition quiz.
  • Free healthy weight checks using the Tanita body composition scales
LumiraDx Care Solutions - SILVER
  • 5 x staff trained as Mental Health First Aiders and working group formed
  • Mindfulness training delivered and lunchtime sessions established
  • 3 x staff gained IOSH Health and Safety qualifications in 2017
Mount Hawke Academy - SILVER
  • INSET training day dedicated to Staff Health and wellbeing
  • 2 more champions have been trained up to form a Health and Wellbeing team
  • Many staff receiving free counselor sessions
Ocean Housing Group - SILVER
  • Our Healthy hub portal – promoting Sugar Smart
  • Weight Management initiative
  • Raising awareness of health and wellbeing on the company’s strategic agenda
St Breock Primary School - SILVER
  • Weekly ‘keep fit’ class offered to all staff
  • Our involvement, as a pilot school, with Gavin Armstrong's Functional Movement project, which staff could access for free
  • Termly social event, for all staff to engage in
St Stephens Churchtown Academy - SILVER
  • We now provide free fruit each week to staff members to contribute to healthy eating at school
  • All staff have been given a water bottle as a gift to encourage greater water intake and hydration
  • We continue to provide support to staff and have been able to signpost several members to services over this last year to help improve their health and wellbeing
Trewithen Dairy - SILVER
  • Signing up to Sugar Smart
  • Provision of a spinning bike at site for all to use and installation of cycle shelter
  • We have undertaken mental health awareness training for most of our senior team including the Directors and have also signed up 3 of our colleagues to undertake the ‘Mental Health First Aid’ training
Truro Learning Academy - SILVER
  • Positive staff moral and team spirit
  • The positive impact of the 'Box of Joy‘
  • Ensuring we acknowledge and celebrate profession and personal achievements
Gold Award Levels:
Biscovey Academy - GOLD
  • Introducing a Staffroom stress box to allow all staff a chance to unwind
  • Supporting a number of colleagues through some very challenging personal situations
  • Promoting out of school activities to enhance team building and overall well being
Bugle School - GOLD
  • 6 staff are now trained as health and well-being champions
  • Subsidised staff lunches (a negotiated cost of £1.00 per meal from Chartwells)
  • Staff compete against one another with ‘Fitbits’ to increase their activity levels
Cornwall Council - GOLD
  • Nationally recognised and named ‘Best Health and Wellbeing Initiative’ by CIPD in 2017
  • Higher levels of participation in Health and Wellbeing initiatives than ever before – more champions, more attendance at campaigns, increased hits to intranet and internet, more volunteering days, wider wellbeing training offer and increased engagement in staff surveys
  • Introduction of a Healthy Cooking Course for council and school staff
DWP St Austell ESA Service Centre - GOLD
  • Training our managers with the ‘Making Every Contact Count’ training, which was shared with all staff
  • Training 25 staff in Mindfulness/Sleep hygiene and Meditation, which all staff positively promoted to their colleagues, using newly acquired techniques
  • And most recently Stop Smoking Session, with 4 staff signing up to the challenge
Environment Agency - GOLD
  • Driving our wellbeing ambition for employees to be healthier as a result of working here, which has raised awareness and increased local leadership in Health and Wellbeing for all our staff
  • 32 Mental health first aiders – identifiable through ID Lanyards; publicised through local awareness campaign and signs next to office first aiders so all staff know this support is available
  • Healthy weight awareness targeted to our office and field based staff – with increased staff classified as healthy weight
Frugi (Cut 4 Cloth Ltd) - GOLD
  • Launch of the Frugi Health & Wellbeing Guide, covering core health and wellbeing issues and signposting to other organisations
  • Centralised resource centre, detailing all of our events, initiatives and external resources, that everyone can access
  • Shortlisted for the Active Workplace for the Year award by Cornwall Sports Partnership. Competition was fierce and whilst we didn’t win, our efforts to raise awareness and increase engagement levels with a variety of initiatives were recognised
PALL Aerospace - GOLD
  • Healthy Eating - Provision of a new salad bar, offering healthy options. Employees have flexibility to make requests & pre order at subsidies cost
  • Healthy Wellbeing Clinics to staff with the option to attend OH for blood pressure, cholesterol, urinalysis, smoking cessation/weight management – general health and wellbeing and to discuss any concerns
  • Mental Health - more emphasis on supporting employees. OH support, private counselling, supporting employees to attend Stress Busters during worktime. Managers are receiving specific training on stress management/awareness
Pendennis Shipyard - GOLD
  • Team of 8 staff now trained to Face fit Respirators and 1 lead recently accredited to ‘Fit2Fit’
  • Review of all Gym classes and new 2018 schedule devised to accommodate members’ requirements
  • The Galley now offering on request ‘out of hours’ catering service for late/night shift workers.  Plastic food containers no longer in use and replaced with cardboard
Proper Cornish & Furniss - GOLD
  • Healthy Weight and Eating workshops – with measurable achievements by individuals and the team
  • Introduction of fully trained Mental Health First Aiders into the Company
  • A proactive approach to musculoskeletal issues within the workplace
Rodda's - GOLD
  • The implementation of our company values of working together, openness and responsibility and our very own thank you cards which all staff give to each other for brilliant ideas, going the extra mile, for caring and for being a star!
  • Focusing on mental health by renewing our Mindful Employer pledges and providing Mindful Manager training for all of our managers
  • Providing a work placement for people with learning disabilities in partnership with Boscawen Farm, which has helped our own staff to learn and develop coaching skills and mentoring
Sandy Hill Academy - GOLD
  • Hydration - Recognising that hydration levels needed improving.  Providing all staff with water bottles and a water cooler in the staff room
  • Vitamins - Having hit 'bug season' we brought in fresh fruit and vegetables and provided staff with fresh juice and smoothies. We titled this 'Vitamins in a cup'
  • Awareness -  Raising awareness to regular health screening.  Borrowed replica breasts and testicles to show how to check for lumps
Shortlanesend School - GOLD
  • Calendar of events - providing a monthly change to our H&W focus
  • Santa Fun Run as a staff - some being dragged around by our children!
  • Fitness Buddies - given colleagues confidence to attend fitness classes
St Austell Brewery - GOLD
  • Setting up the HOPS (Health Optimisation and Promotion Scheme) initiative within the brewery to bring all workplace health benefits under one umbrella and to  ensure these initiatives are visible to all.
  • The development and running of the HOPS Voluntary Health Checks available to all employees and includes checks of BP, HR, Glucose, Cholesterol, BMI and respiratory peak flow.
  • Developing a strategy of support for those experiencing stress including signposting, funded counselling and OH support
St Minver School - GOLD
  • Training of a second Health and Wellbeing Champion
  • A significant number of staff participating in the Truro ROC5k run (in horrendous weather)
  • Supporting a number of staff with significant health and personal problems
  • Healthy Weight programme for all staff to access
TRAC A PharmaLex Company - GOLD
  • Virtual Three Peaks Challenge – climb a combined total of 2010 flights of stairs to promote heart health and boost exercise as part of a normal routine. Participation levels were fantastic and the team embraced the challenge!
  • Trying new alternative therapies or relaxation/self-care techniques - taster session of chair yoga and an additional 3 taster sessions of a holistic therapy of choice to promote relaxation, mental health and musculoskeletal awareness
  • Truro Treasure Trail – incorporate an outdoor activity with a staff social that included both a mental and physical workout!
Truro & Penwith College - GOLD
  • Absence rates consistently well below National and Industry figures (2%)
  • The College has won both the AoC’s Beacon Award for Mental Health and Wellbeing and Leading Light Accolade
  • Over 70 Staff received ‘Mental Health First Aid’ training
Whitemoor Academy - GOLD
  • We participated in the Santa Run for the second year in a row
  • Recipe of the week challenge
  • Creating a more positive and pleasant staffroom environment, both physically and mentally
YMCA Cornwall - GOLD
  • Four teams entered into the 2017 Get Active Challenge this year
  • Signed up to the Sugar Smart Initiative and immediately signed up to two pledges
  • Implemented a new People Management System that encourages better communications between managers and employees and also allows employees to book their holidays either online or via a smartphone app from home
Mentor Awards: for their contribution in sharing good practice and encouraging and supporting others in promoting a healthy workplace.
Sandy Hill Academy

Health Champions:
This year we had 13 nominations which is fantastic.  Often key people or a team of key people are the real champions who ensure things happen and health and well-being stays on the agenda with many opportunities organised and support on offer for staff to access
Helen Rundle and Dan Turner, Angel Fulfilment Services Health Champion of the Year

"Helen & Dan became our Mental Health First Aiders in Sept 2017. Since then, they've supported over 15 people to feel safe and supported at work or during their return to work. Both have made time to use knowledge from the MHFA co! urse and from their own experiences to help others to feel less isolated. Their aim is make coming work a 'safe haven' for those who don't have that feeling at home. We've had 3 employees return to work sooner than expected because of the support they've been given at work; one employee stating "if everything else is going wrong, I know the team [at work] are my rock and I don't need to feel so alone". Helen & Dan put their own workloads & pressures aside in order to offer their support their colleagues and I think this deserves recognition"

Best Newcomer 2018: This award recognises great progress in the first year of engaging and working with the Healthy Workplace programme.
Environment Agency (Cornwall)

This award recognises great progress in the first year of engaging and working with the Healthy Workplace programme.  The workplace health team were so impressed with ‘ENVIRONMENT AGENCY Cornwall’ based in Bodmin.  The support and commitment from management is excellent and it was clear both Steve and Jessie have gone above and beyond to drive the culture and wellbeing ambition for all employees to be healthier as a result of working at the Environment Agency. 
The passion and the commitment to achieve what they have within just one year, is truly inspirational.  In addition, the plans for next year are exciting and will ensure the great work will continue and grow.
To go straight to Gold in the first year shows a real passion for workplace health.  Two examples of great successes this year include:
Firstly - Training Mental health first aiders – 32 members of staff trained and identifiable to all staff through ID Lanyards; publicised to all staff through local awareness campaign and signs next to office first aiders so all staff know this support is available
Secondly - Healthy weight awareness including confidential body composition analyses and healthy eating workshops targeted to our office and field based staff – Great evidence of effectiveness with increased staff classified as healthy weight in follow up sessions

Continued Excellence - Rodda's
Rodda's joined the programme at the initial pilot stage 10 years ago and are still going so strong and every year continue to impress our assessment team. It has always been such a pleasure to work with this company and it has been wonderful to work together as many new project developments have begun through our partnership work such as the Mentor Award and our ‘Cook Well, Eat Well Challenge’.  A few years ago their work was also recognised by the British Heart Foundation and European Health & Safety Magazine
They are also committed to sharing their great practice and are very keen to mentor other organisations.
The culture and ethos is truly embedded within this company and each year it is fantastic to see new developments, new ideas and a continued investment in the health and wellbeing of their staff.
It is with great pleasure to award Rodda’s with our first ‘Continued Excellence Award’.
Special Recognition - Proper Cornish & Furniss
This award goes to a company who have worked with our healthy weight team to really focus on this health topic with some excellent outcomes and have helped develop a good practice model that we now promote to others.  It really shows the importance of the workplace giving staff time to attend, the value staff took from it and with management and all staff levels taking part it broke down barriers and shows how the workplace can be a fantastic setting for peer support.

Outstanding Contribution - Roger Green
Roger Green has been in various roles within the education sector spanning over 30 years.
Over his successful career he has been the chair of CAPH, an SLE, an NLE, Head Teacher, Executive Principal and is currently the Director of Wellbeing for Aspire Academy Trust before retiring at the end of this term.
Roger has always been an enthusiastic leader that believes in valuing staff and creating an environment where everyone matters. Over the past four years Roger has strived to take this belief further. Through perseverance and a commitment to making Health & Wellbeing being heard and taken seriously he has successfully implemented a purposeful and robust Health & Wellbeing programme into Aspire Academy Trust that is benefitting over 700 members of staff.
Roger’s philosophy behind Health & Wellbeing is because “it is just the right thing to do”.
Roger’s passion and commitment to the Aspire wellbeing programme means that his legacy will continue through the heart of Aspire Academy Trust for many, many years to come.
