Dear readers,
Welcome to 2017!
Toward the end of last year, I made the decision to breathe some new life into my novel-in-progress. Part of the story takes place decades in the future, but something was missing from that future timeline.
Dystopia. That's what was missing, and is now easier for me to envision and write about. There was already conflict in the story, but it didn't go deep enough. I was subconsciously resisting a dystopian vision of the future because I always want my writing to offer hope—but I can do both.
Hope comes in the resolve to keep fighting for a better future. Some scientists will continue improving artificial limbs for the disabled, while others will create more sophisticated weapons to disable people. Some of us will become nicer to each other, while others will only get meaner. Who will be in control of which technologies? How much will progress slow down if certain scientific research funding is cut?
These are the questions that drive me to the keyboard. It might take even longer than I thought, but it will be a better story for it.
Thank you for your patience, and as always, thanks for reading.
