REOPENING PLANS MUST INCLUDE CRUISE

Hello <<First Name>>

While a big part of Australia’s population remains in lockdown, it’s still important for our industry to secure a plan for the future so that we’re ready when conditions allow a careful return to cruising.

In recent days CLIA has been working with MPs to arrange more detailed discussions with health officials, so we can work through the extensive new health protocols that will underpin our revival in this region.

Now that Australian governments have agreed to develop a four-phase plan to ease travel restrictions and other Covid-19 measures, CLIA is making this a key focus of our lobbying. We are working to ensure cruising is included in this plan and that a pathway to resumption is opened. Importantly, we want this plan to include New Zealand and the addition of cruising to the trans-Tasman bubble at the appropriate time.

To help support our efforts, we’re urging Australian travel agents, industry suppliers and other stakeholders to hold their own meetings with MPs, to show them how the current crisis is impacting real Australians.

To get involved, visit Meet Your MP where you’ll find an online toolkit with instructions on how to seek a meeting with your MP and put forward your personal case for cruising’s revival.

In New Zealand, we’re continuing to work closely with the New Zealand Cruise Association to open a pathway to resumption on both sides of the Tasman. Though the time isn’t right for a public campaign, we are still engaging with the government to find the right solution for New Zealand.

Across our region, CLIA’s campaign for a cruise resumption is undoubtedly gaining traction. With your help we can build this momentum even further.

Stay Safe,

Joel Katz
Managing Director, CLIA Australasia

COVID-19 UPDATE

Hong Kong is set to join the global cruise revival this week, with strict new Covid-19 protocols allowing a resumption of short itineraries for local residents.

After approvals from the Hong Kong Government, the first in a series of local cruise-to-nowhere itineraries is scheduled to depart from the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal on Friday and will sail with reduced capacity and pre-boarding testing for all passengers and crew.
Hong Kong’s resumption is similar to operations in other Asian locations including Singapore and Taiwan, where domestic-only sailings within a local ‘bubble’ have allowed a careful and tightly managed return to operations.

In recent days other destinations including Alaska, Scotland and Florida have also joined the cruise revival. Globally, around 800,000 passengers have sailed successfully since July last year in countries where cruising has resumed.

CLIA and cruise lines continue to lobby for a similar pathway towards resumption in Australia and New Zealand, with strict health protocols supporting domestic-only operations while international borders remain closed.
