One whirlwind week down. Congrats to everyone for getting back into the routine or starting a new one (all you Kindergartners)!  Thanks for the great job turning in school forms and for getting your kids excited about the new year.  It's going to be a fun one. Keep informed each week by reading the flyers in your child's Thursday envelope, reading the weekly online newsletter, joining YG on Facebook, and striking up a conversation with a parent in the hall. And don't forget that PTO Meetings are ALWAYS the 2nd Tuesday of each month in the cafeteria with free childcare provided.
The more you reach out, the more you know!

Dear Yujin Gakuen families,

It was an eventful first week of school. Perhaps a bit more excitement than we wanted on Monday. I’m glad that there was not a real threat during the lockout, and we were also able to learn some things and we will be better prepared for a future event. The lockout also showed how well our students handled the very long lockout without a recess until 1:35. Our staff managed the situation very well, having had no time this year to practice for such an event. I’m proud of them for remaining focused on teaching and learning despite the disruption of the lockout.

On a more positive note, I want to share just how happy I was to see so many people at our annual Back to School Barbeque. It looked like the biggest turnout I had seen in my time at Yujin Gakuen. The high turnout reflects both our growing enrollment, currently 314, and our growing support from each of you. As I said at the barbeque, there is very positive “word of mouth” about the high quality of our Japanese immersion program at Yujin Gakuen.

I will speak for myself and for our staff in thanking the PTO board members, Lisa, Rita, Chelsea, Robin, and Izumi, for making over our staff room. Over the summer, they painted, replaced the furniture and added shelving and a new refrigerator. We are very grateful to them and to our PTO for their support.

Finally, I want to thank our Japanese interns for their help in getting our year off to a great start. Unfortunately, this is the final week for all the interns but Keiji, who will stay one more week. Thanks to Nami Brown for bringing them here and arranging their homestays. Thanks to our homestay families for opening up their homes to them. Our interns will be sorely missed, and we appreciate them for their invaluable assistance.

Thanks to every student and parent in the Yujin Gakuen community.

Yours sincerely,

Thomas Piowaty

Can YOU (and a fine group of minions) get YG's Fall Festival off the ground?
AKI MATSURI is waiting for it's team.
We need a chair and committee to run Aki Matsuri (Fall Festival/Carnival).  Aki Matsuri is held in the YG Cafeteria on a fall evening and consists of games for children, a bake sale, and some general community building.  If you are willing to organize this event PLEASE email the PTO at and we can get you started!  Lots of energy but no experience required!
Help us bring in the money!
Staffing the YG Beer Booth at Oregon Duck home games brings in the BIG bucks for our school...please consider donating your time.  And bring a friends for goodness sake!
We need volunteers for the game on Sept. 24th

Please sign up in the links below by the Wednesday before the game so we can get accurate names to the UO.

Saturday September 24th (Double point game for 5th grade)
Saturday October 8th (Double point game for 2nd grade)
October 29th (Double point game for 1st grade)
November 12th (Double point game for Kinder)

The PTO adds a fun incentive each year, where the grade with the most volunteers enjoys a $500 classroom choice windfall - here's how the grades stack up after two games:

1st Place - Third Grade
2nd Place - Fourth Grade
3rd Place - Fifth Grade
4th Place - First Grade
5th Place - Kindergarten
6th Place - Second Grade
