A vote for a $10,000 expenditure request to cover two six-month interns will take place at our next PTO meeting on Tuesday, February 21st.
The PTO is asking for $10,000 to pay for two International Society of Educational and Cultural Exchange interns from Japan for a six month period. These interns will be a part of the Japanese Assistant Teacher Program and will assist our staff during the school day just as our short term interns have done for years.
The interns from ISECE do not pay us a stipend to come to our school and so it will be up to the PTO to cover those costs. $10,000 will cover a $450 monthly stipend to the host family, a bus pass, lunches, and possible English language lessons that they require for both interns. The Japanese immersion school in Portland uses ISECE for up to 20 interns per year.
If the PTO membership agrees to cover the $10,000 cost for two six-month interns, they will arrive at the end of August and leave in late February for the 2017-2018 school year. $10,000 is far less than the cost of hiring an education assistant from 4J. For example, the PTO paid $35,000 for one five-hour-a-day Education Assistant this year. If this is approved and having two interns next year is successful, then it is something the PTO can decide whether to have interns for the whole school year in subsequent years.
