January 10, 2017

Tonight there is a special guest, Kerri Sage, who will share information about the district's TAG program (Talented and Gifted). Please join in - there will be opportunities for questions and you can get info about the upcoming school choice outreach for our school. If you have questions about anything related to YG, the PTO meeting is one of the best places to have your ideas heard and to help make a change. Have you ever been to a meeting?  If not, make it your 2017 resolution.
GET INVOLVED!  Childcare provided.

New 4J Attendance Guidelines

The new 4J attendance guidelines will consider every tardy as unexcused. Teachers will mark the student absent and Diane will note the time the student arrives after the school start bell. Every two weeks, tardy letters will be sent out.

Districts find this initial tardy letter usually cleans up 80% of the tardy problems. If it doesn't, a second letter is sent out.  If there are still problems, a truant officer will contact the home to set up a meeting or home visit to see how they can help.

Please let Diane or Tom know if you have any questions.
The Shedd Institute’s Free Jazz Tickets for Students Program

The Free Shedd Jazz Tickets for Students program sets aside a substantial block of tickets to most of The Shedd’s plethora of 2016-17 jazz concerts (representing the many aspects of this rich and diverse American art form) for middle, high and college students on a first-come, first-serve basis. The program is made possible by a grant from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. Contact The Shedd Ticket Office for information.

All students, elementary through college are eligible, regardless whether they are music students. All that is required to pick up one’s ticket is to show a current student ID at time of purchase or at Will Call. The Institute will also work with schools or educational programs who wish to organize groups of students wishing to attend. Contact The Shedd Ticket Office at 541.434.7000 |  tickets@theshedd.net

By longstanding policy, The Shedd Institute offers significant student discounts to over 95% of its performances in its ongoing mission to make world class musical experiences in many genres available to our region’s young people. This program will continue. The Free Shedd Jazz Tickets for Students program is a special, additional strategy for accomplishing this important educational objective.

Shedd concerts that are currently on The Shedd’s 2016-17 schedule that are eligible for The Shedd Free Jazz Tickets for Students program include the following (additional Shedd jazz concerts will be added throughout the season):

Jan 12          The Tierney Sutton Quintet (this week!)
Feb 9-12      The Jazz Kings: Clarinet Marmalade - Jazz & variation, 1918-33
Feb 17          Tony Glausi Sextet
Feb 22          Bill Mays at The Movies
Mar 9            Chuck Redd: My Shining Hour
Apr 6             Carl Woideck: The Undiscovered Miles Davis
May 18-21    The Jazz Kings: My Lucky Star – Arthur Freed & Nacio Herb Brown
May 12         The Frank Vignola Trio

A little more about Tierney Sutton Thursday's concert:

Tierney Sutton returns to the Jaqua Concert Hall with her band in support of their new CD, The Sting Variations. With a voice The New York Times calls “as pure and sparkling as mountain spring water,” she celebrates the American Songbook with traditional folk songs, Broadway melodies, Gershwin highlights and songs from Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story – music she documented on her GRAMMY-nominated 2011 release, American Road. An Omaha native, Sutton found her footing as a singer and bandleader shortly after arriving in her adopted home of Los Angeles in the mid 1990s, where she’s led one of the most durable working bands in jazz for the last two decades.

On Monday, January 16th, we celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. and his accomplishments on behalf of freedom and justice. Enjoy the day and we'll see you back at school on Tuesday!
Parents - we are looking for pictures to download on to a digital frame. Please stop by and download some of your pics if you have a thumbdrive to bring them in on…thanks!  This will help show YG activities to people who stop by our school and will be a great visual to help parents considering YG for their students.

Hello YG Famillies!

I am looking for  families that would like to host an intern this February.  All the interns will come from the Tokyo Women's Christian University. They will stay with you for 4 weeks (February 4 - March 3 or 4).  The interns will go school with your child at YG to help all of our kids in the classrooms and then weekends are all family time :)

This is a very fun program and your child and family will learn more about Japan, the language and Japanese culture.

If you are interesting hosting an intern please contact Nami Brown.

Our school district is looking for two parent volunteers from each school who the district office could use to help with communicating district info.
