President's Letter

1) Eglin AFA Members, We are strong because we work and play as a family. We take care of each other as a family with support and backing.  I come to you today as President of the Eglin AFA Chapter with my hat in hand for a donation (we are a 501c, so you're able to recoup it on taxes).  Eglin AFA Chapter pours out resources to fund meaningful activities all year long. Let me give you some examples.

a) The Eglin Company Grade Officers are convening panels to hear experts and learn from their expertise.  They plan to routinely support this kind of informative effort. When they do, they would like seed money to have refreshments at the Club.  They have come to their AFA for that support.... that's growing our young ones- yes, we want to do this.

 b) The Aerospace Education Foundation provides scholarships to well deserving High School JROTC graduates - those funds primarily come from donations associated with our 44th annual Golf Tournament at the Eglin Golf Course. Contributions toward our $10K-25K in scholarships are flowing in- St Joe $7,000; Raytheon $2,000; Lockheed Martin $2,000- and many others are planning contributions as part of the 3 November Doolittle Golf Tournament at the historic Eglin Golf Course. Thursday 3 November, the day after the annual NDIA Symposium is our 43rd annual event.  Please sign up to play. If you are like me and would rather participate in other activities near the water in the Gulf of Mexico, we can still support by buying a Tee Box for $100, or become a sponsor. Please see details below.
c) Air Force Ball - A couple of weeks ago I let you know that we have an opportunity to support airmen going to the Air Force Ball at Eglin Air Force Base in King Hangar with the Air Force Band by making a contribution to pay expenses, pay the remainder on the reduced ticket prices and pay for the other sunk costs to support our men and women so they can attend this year. So far we have $650 in donations- they need a few more generous donations to cover the costs.

d) AFA Wounded Airman Program: FY17 AFW2 Warrior Care Event.  23-29 April 2017. For the third year Eglin AFA will support the Air Force Wounded Warriors who come to Eglin Air Force Base for seven days with CARE (Caregivers, Adaptive Sports, Recovering Airman Mentorship, and Employment) events. These airmen come for some or all of the following: Warrior Games Training,  Intro to Adaptive Sports, RAMP Training, Career Readiness Bootcamp, CARE Fair, Town hall Meeting, Ambassador Training, Music & Art Therapy, Veterans of Comedy, Spirituality in Recovery, Caregiver Events & Symposium. This April we especially supported the Kick Off event, Opening Ceremonies, Senior Leader scrimmages and Closing Ceremonies. We went out to our community who graciously supplied waters, Gatorades, healthy snacks and lunches.

e) The Local Eglin AFA. We do not assess organization dues. I would like to challenge you to make a contribution to us as if we do. It will keep us going and flowing. (Thanks in advance.) Make the check payable to Eglin AFA. (If it is earmarked, please note. Example: “For the Eglin Air Force Ball”).  Our mailing address is:  Eglin AFA, PO Box 176, Shalimar, FL 32579
Our Eglin AFA Chapter has a tradition of supporting our Eglin Community in a variety of generous ways. Thank you so much for your gift(s). Together, we make a difference in many lives.

2)  Rest assured that Eglin AFA focuses on the main goals: Educate, Advocate, Support -

50th Vietnam War Commemoration
The Air Force Armament Museum foundation is sponsoring a Vietnam veteran "welcome home" cookout on Saturday 5 November, 2016.  Everyone is invited to attend!  The Museum Foundation has had numerous phone calls inquiring about this event from local vets, so they expect a big crowd.  Our Community Partner, Tom Rice from the historic Magnolia Grill, has generously offered to provide food for this event. The Foundation would like to book a USO-type show for entertainment, and may need to rent porta-potties, etc, so they are soliciting donations. Their goal is to raise $5,000 to host an event that properly honors the men and women who answered our Nation’s call during the Vietnam War.
Any donation of time or money would be greatly appreciated.  Please contact:

Veterans Stand Down Day
The Annual Homeless Veterans Stand Down will take place on November 4th.  Last year over 100 Veterans and their family members were provided services such as VA medical care, immunizations, mental health counseling, Veterans Court with Judge Maney, bicycle and bus pass distribution, haircuts, and many more services. It is about feeding, handing out clothes and much more, as we have Career Source (jobs) and the VA HUDVASH (housing) folks present to help set them up for long term success. Friday, 4 November will require around 70 community volunteers to escort these veterans to the various veteran service organization stations. We CANNOT do this without Community Volunteers! If you are interested in volunteering or you have questions, please contact the Eglin AFA VP for Veterans Dennis Krebs at 850 855-3357 or
Cookie Caper Wednesday 30 November
The Season is coming … Team Eglin comes together to ensure our dorm residents receive some Holiday Cheer by way of home-baked goodies.  Once again we’d like to invite the surrounding communities to participate by baking and donating cookies.
On 30 Nov, we will begin accepting cookie donations and can arrange for your cookies to be picked up from your place of business.  If you have Base access, cookies can be dropped off on Eglin at the East Gate Chapel.
Cookies should be placed in disposable plastic bags or foil pans. Please don’t individually wrap the cookies.
On 1 Dec, our volunteers, consisting of Team Eglin spouses, military, and civilian personnel, will pick and pack a dozen cookies for the service members.
We also have roughly 500 white lunch bags that we would like to have decorated (crayon, marker, stickers etc.) prior to the event if you know of any Churches or daycares that could assist with this. I look forward to working with you on this event and cannot thank you enough for your support!

The Wingman Requests Your Articles

The Wingman section of the Air Force Magazine is designed to showcase AFA members from the field. This can include Chapter events and activities, but also AFA members within our Chapter. The submissions do not have to be polished. You can provide information to the Staff at the Air Force Magazine for further development. If you have an idea for an article, please contact the Wingman at before you put pen to paper or take a photo. They would love to hear from you!

For example, are you an AFA member who is:
a veteran of Space-A travel
a chow hall Air Force cook who can make meals for 1,000
a long-distance bicyclist, hiker
Senior Olympics athlete
a member who helps restore heritage aircraft
Please consider sharing your experiences with your fellow AFA members via an article in Wingman.
Thank you!
