As concerns continue to spread in regards to the coronavirus (COVID-19), Slow Food Noosa acknowledges the significant impact this is having on communities and individuals in Australia and across the world. Our thoughts are with you, your families and communities during this time of unprecedented uncertainty.
In line with the Federal Government's announcement to suspend all non-essential gatherings, and the Noosa Eat & Drink Festival's announcement to cancel this year's event in May, Slow Food Noosa has decided to cancel the Snail Trail. This decision has not been made lightly, but will ensure the safety of the community and it's patronage.
We wish you well in remaining safe and healthy and assure you that Slow Food Noosa are here to support you throughout the coming weeks and months wherever possible. We will update our website with any latest event details over the coming months and encourage you to get behind your local farmers, producers and small businesses.
If you are a restaurant, food producer or food outlet and you are continuing to trade during this time, please let us know so we can promote your business to our members and via our social media channels.

Now more than ever is the time to support your local farmers, producers and small business by shopping local. With the panic buying mentality well and truly set in, it's time to think outside the box and perhaps you drive past a road side stall every day or you have a local market right on your doorstep? Farms and local shops are a great way of supporting the local food supply while keeping away from major supermarkets.
By shopping local you will not only be eating seasonally but you will be contributing to lower food miles too so take a drive and you may stumble upon some great options. Noosa has some new buns in town! Noosa natives and Snail of Approval recipients, Megan and Richard Dean from The Steam Bun Co. (SBC) have taken the plunge and opened their first shop in the Noosa Junction.
The idea come about in the kitchen of a popular modern Asian restaurant tucked away in Sunshine Beach and over the next 12 months the couple worked tirelessly to grow the wholesale distribution side of the business before realising they had in fact outgrown their Noosaville industrial kitchen.
Opening their own retail shop seemed like the natural next step, so when they were unexpectantly offered a commercial space in the Junction, they jumped at the chance and set about creating an ‘innovative taste experience’ for locals and visitors alike.
The bespoke menu of traditionally handmade steamed buns offers a diverse range of flavours and fillings but it's the freshly harvested local seasonal produce that really makes these buns extra special.
‘The Snail of Approval program really captures everything we are trying to achieve and we support local suppliers by using the best in local produce wherever possible, but truthfully the ingredients really speak for themselves,’ Megan said
‘We choose our flavours based on the seasons and adapt those flavours according to what’s available to us, currently our eggplant buns have been a big hit with our customers’!
Whether you are a savoury lover, vegetarian or sweet tooth, Steam Bun Co. have the perfect bun for you. The SBC team are also working on an exciting new ‘Australiana’ range featuring native bush foods so keep your eyes peeled for these delicious editions!
Customers can purchase retail packs to cook at home, or choose from an ever-expanding take away menu of hot steamed buns made fresh daily.

SNAIL SPOTLIGHT PIGGY IN THE MIDDLE
Cousins Dean and Mason Mayne along with their wives Kate and Krystal form the awesome foursome that is Piggy in the Middle. Hailing from Rolleston in the Central Highlands region, the boys' six generation farming heritage is evident by their obvious respect and understanding of their land, combined with how they care for their animals at their farms in Kilkivan, north-west of Gympie.
Both families produce free range eggs, chicken, pork, beef and lamb on their respective farms and pool their harvest each week to run a stall at the Noosa and Kawana Farmers Markets.
Snail of Approval recipients from the beginning, they have quickly become market day favourites and produce a range of cuts for many of the top restaurants on the coast including our own Matt Golinski.
With 260 acres between them, their Berkshire and Saddleback pigs, Dauper sheep and chickens have plenty of room to roam freely and are protected by Maremma dogs.

IMMUNITY BOOSTING ELIXIR
2 cups filtered water
1 chai tea bag or 2-3 cloves
Half a lemon freshly squeezed - leave to soak
Handful of fresh berries (blackberries work best) or elderflower syrup
1 cinnamon stick
1 teaspoon of freshly grated turmeric or 1/8th teaspoon dry turmeric
1 teaspoon freshly grated ginger
small pinch black pepper
small pinch sea salt
Heat water in a small sauce pot till simmering. Add chai tea bag/cloves and simmer for 1 minute. Add the lemon juice, spices, turmeric and ginger and simmer another minute. Remove from heat and stir in elderberry syrup or crushed berries. Stir to combine and serve.
OPTIONAL: Add 1-2 teaspoons raw honey for extra sweetness, and/or a splash or coconut or almond milk for creaminess
