Over the next 8 weeks we are alternating our Fuel For The Week devotions with special guest writer, Mark Greenwood.  This is Part 3 of 4.

Caring Actions

I’m sat in the assembly hall at school waiting for the Headteacher to start. Mrs Darby plays the first line of the song slowing as she reaches the end of it, leaving a pregnant pause. As she hits the first note of the first line again, this time with greater ferocity we join in, not quite like a finely rehearsed choir but with good volume nevertheless…

When I needed a neighbour, were you there, were you there?
When I needed a neighbour, were you there?
And the creed and the colour and the name won't matter,  were you there?

The rest of the verses didn’t vary much: I was hungry and thirsty. I was cold, I was naked. When I needed a shelter. When I needed a healer. All of these asking, “Were you there, were you there?” finishing with, “And the creed and the colour and the name won't matter, were you there?

Though I may not sing the song these days the words are an incredible challenge.

In Acts 10:37,38 Luke says, “You know what has happened throughout the province of Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached — how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.”

Luke sees fit to draw our attention to the truth that Jesus (full of the Holy Spirit) went around doing good! Echoes of the song from my assembly synergize with the life of Jesus and what he expects of us as we follow him.

My friend often says, “People won’t care what you know until they know that you care”. We have an amazing opportunity to show people we care. When the question is asked, “Were you there, were you there?” it would be amazing if the loudest voices in the choir were Elim’s male voices: “I’ll be there, I’ll be there.”

Dear Lord, help my friends know that I’ll be there to care; and as they know that I care may they begin to care about what I know.
