WEEKLY DEVOTION

Ten-Pin Bowling

Passage

David put his hand in the bag, took out a stone, slung it, and hit the Philistine on his forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell facedown to the ground.
1 Samuel 17:49

Perspective

I have always enjoyed ten-pin bowling.  There is nothing quite as satisfying as getting a strike and seeing all the pins tumble!  Actually there is – it is getting several strikes in a row and in a game!  My personal best score is 197, but I have a friend called Piet from the States and he once scored over 240.  I did manage to impress my sons and nephews no end one afternoon once, by scoring the perfect 300 on ten-pin bowling – but it was on the Wii and that’s not quite the same thing!
One day, some of us as gents were exchanging good-natured banter about ten-pin bowling at church, when someone interrupted us and called us out for playing a game that seemed to need so little strength.  ‘Where’s the fitness and strength needed for bowling?’ he scoffed.  His view was that bowling was for wimps.  But as he said this, something didn’t sit quite right with me about his comment.  And I don’t know if this ever happens to you, but the perfect response to this remark only occurred to me ten minutes later on the way home from church in the car, which was this…

Point

Click to TWEET: David did not kill Goliath with strength, he killed him with accuracy. Some battles are won with truth not force.

Ponder

What battles in your life have you tried fighting with force when truth might have been the better option?

Pray

Father,
Help me to know when the right and truthful thing is enough all by itself.
Amen.
