Madison WI Aims to Connect Kids to Nature

Madison WI was selected as one of seven cities nationally to participate in an initiative to connect urban and minority children to nature. Created through a partnership between the National League of Cities and the Children & Nature Network, Cities Connecting Children to Nature is focused on getting urban youths to spend more time in green space. Children can experience physical and mental health benefits, as well as improved educational outcomes. Ensuring that all children have access to green space is seen as a way to improve the quality of life and boost success among urban youths.

Fire Works:
How Forest Fires Work

Undergrowth began to crowd the forest floor.

If parents spend all their time filling up their child’s spare time, then the child’s never going to learn to do this for themselves.”

After an exam, two findings emerged: The bird would be fine, and "boy did he smell good!" Seems likely that this day-glo gull was picking out pieces of chicken and fell into a vat — which was outside and, for some reason, had been left uncovered.

Student-Lead Sustainable Agriculture

When the Student Organic Farm at Iowa State was first set up in the late '90s, in response to a class about sustainable agriculture, it became one of the area's first to use the CSA model. As the farm grew, so did academic interest in sustainability. Now the university offers a graduate degree in sustainable agriculture.

At a university where large-scale production of corn and soybeans are the primary interests for many  on campus, it's especially remarkable that the organic farm is wholly embraced.
