October 2014

October is National Farm to School Month!

Increasingly our nation's children are more aware of where their food comes from, as well as being exposed to lessons on healthy eating. During National Farm to School Month we acknowledge and celebrate farm to school programs' contributions in supporting a healthier next generation.

Tick Tock Potato Clock

Subjects: Chemistry, Taxonomy

Students can use the chemical properties of certain acidic fruits and vegetables (like potatoes) to generate electricity. The energy that will power their potato clocks comes from the electrochemical properties of two different metals (the electrodes). The potato acts as an electrolyte, or a kind of bridge.

Cooking With Kids

Cooking with Kids motivates and empowers elementary school students to make healthy food choices. Through hands-on nutrition education activities, kindergarten through 6th grade students explore, prepare, and enjoy fresh, affordable foods from around the world.

We are city slickers and learning botany and zoology out of the textbook or internet. At Nature’s Classroom Institute, they are IN it, living it, and taking the students out of their comfort zone. The students were walking in a dry river bed that was once a river and looking for fossils and creatures.

There is peer-to-peer learning. The students develop listening skills and the willingness to give into your own ideas with the understanding that someone else may have a better idea. The school teachers get to watch the student's metamorphosis from a nervous, unsure student to a confident, courageous person.

As an educator, now we will start the learning in nature and then reinforce it in the classroom. Nature’s Classroom Institute’s challenges were not about winning, it’s about process of learning.
