March 2016

National Nutrition Month®

The 2016 theme for National Nutrition Month® is "Savor the Flavor of Eating Right," which encourages everyone to take time to enjoy food traditions and appreciate the pleasures, great flavors and social experiences food can add to our lives. How, when, why and where we eat are just as important as what we eat. Develop a mindful eating pattern that includes nutritious and flavorful foods — that's the best way to savor the flavor of eating right!

Ready, Set, Grow!

The students will combine a discussion of the basic needs and structure of plants with actual planting. Younger students will physically act out the parts of a plant while learning their function.

Stained Glass Pasta

A classic art project for kids is the macaroni necklace and for good reason, pasta is a fun material to use in art because it’s inexpensive, the shapes are diverse and beautiful, and it’s so tactile. This pasta project uses colored flat lasagna pieces to create faux stained glass. Hang these in a sunny window and they look really lovely!

Launching an
Urban Garden

Americans cultivate an estimated 18,000 community gardens, and now more of their growing is taking place in city lots and building rooftops. Urban gardeners see numerous benefits, from a heightened sense of empowerment to a lighter grocery bill to lowered crime rates.

Decline of Pollinators Threaten World
Food Supply

The birds and the bees need help. Also, the butterflies, moths, wasps, beetles and bats. Without an international effort, a new report warns, increasing numbers of species that promote the growth of hundreds of billions of dollars’ worth of food each year face extinction.
