Nature’s Classroom Institute Arrives in California

Nature’s Classroom Institute, the nation’s premier outdoor residential Environmental Education program, is coming to two sites in California. Serving the Bay area and beyond will be our site above Calistoga in Napa Valley; this beautiful site has access to 500 acres of mountains, a river, farm and vineyard. New accommodations provide housing for up to 110 students and teachers.

Serving the LA and San Diego areas will be our facility above Redlands in the San Bernardino National Forest, on 200 areas of hill country, natural ravines, rivers and comfortable accommodations for up to 110 students and staff.

Mirko Sever, CA Director of Outreach, is available to come to your school to introduce the NCI program to your faculty and parents; additionally to help design and implement a program tailored for your school's needs and curriculum. No request is too large. We have programs specifically designed and taught for Montessori schools. Our staff is trained in Montessori teaching ideals, focusing on child centered programing with hundreds of classes and experiences to choose from. Ask Mirko about our teacher and student in-services available on your campus and about accommodations for larger groups. 10% discount for first time schools.

Diggin' It

Because the formation of soil involves the interaction of numerous physical, chemical, and biological processes, the study of soil provides an unmatched opportunity to illustrate connections between science and a systems approach to understanding earth processes.

Painting with Soil

Soils are one of our most important natural resources. Their many colors add beauty to our landscapes. Most of us overlook this natural beauty because we see it every day. Often these colors blend with vegetation, sky, water, etc. Soil colors serve as pigments in bricks and pottery.

If you look at the works of many of the great artists, you will notice that “earth colors” are dominant. The color and texture of soil painting is fascinating and a creative opportunity for all ages of students.

Creating Visual
Support Strategies
Webinar | Dec 7

Within every Montessori classroom, we all find that there are students who struggle to maintain focus on tasks, organize work through their day, or even manage transitions. During this webinar, we will discuss how to identify and support children who might benefit from additional visual supports in order to have more successful and productive days.

State Parks Waiving Fees Nov 25

Several states across the country have announced their plans to waive fees to park systems on November 25. State parks join a growing number (475 to date) of corporate, nonprofit and public sector organizations that are helping people spend more time in the outdoors this holiday season, and several state, local and federal parks that are always free.

Getting the Urban
Into Nature

Reducing the size and scope of ideal nature such that it can be imagined within an urban radius is an important prerequisite to practical thinking about how we get more of it in our daily lives. Given this, nature advocates would do well to show smaller scale illustrations of nature -  backyards, urban hillsides, etc - as well as the more iconic memes.
