To the Farmer's Market We Go!

When gardens are prolific in good growing seasons, a portion of this food can be preserved for winter, but the rest can be sold to provide “seed money” for the next planting season. People love fresh produce and it is even more special if they know the person or people who grew the food!

Electric Play Dough

Looking to amp up the fun and have your students learn something about electricity? Give this electric play dough experiment a try. Use this activity to talk about electricity and how conductive materials allow it to flow freely, while insulating materials make it slow down or stop.

Decline of Play

Dr. Peter Gray observes that over the past 60 years in the US there has been a dramatic decline in children's freedom to play with other children, without adult direction. Over this same period, there has been an increase in anxiety, depression, feelings of helplessness, suicide, and narcissism in children. Dr. Gray documents why free play is essential for children's healthy social and emotional development.

Stomachs of Seabirds

About eight million tons of plastic waste get dumped into the world’s oceans each year—and it’s wreaking havoc on the lives of seabirds across the planet. A recent study found was that 90% of seabirds living today have ingested some form of plastic, mistaking it for fish. Since this material is not able to pass through the animal, these birds are likely to die as a result.

Parks for Play

As part of the White House’s “Every Kid in the Park” initiative, all fourth graders in the US and their families are entitled to free admission to America’s national parks, federal lands and waters during the 2015-16 school year. The objective is to introduce kids to outdoor recreation.
