Ready, Set, Grow!


The students will combine a discussion of the basic needs and structure of plants with actual planting. Younger students will physically act out the parts of a plant while learning their function.

Smartphone Detox: How To Power Down In A Wired World


When we hear a ding or little ditty alerting us to a new text, email or Facebook post, cells in our brains likely release dopamine — one of the chemical transmitters in the brain's reward circuitry. That dopamine makes us feel pleasure. In other words, just hearing the notification can be more pleasurable than the text, email or tweet. "Smartphone notifications have turned us all into Pavlov's dogs."

Why Does February Only Have 28 Days?


Why does February have 28 days when all the other months get 30 or 31? The answer is part superstition, part politics, and parts astronomy. (Basically, it's the Romans' fault)

The Acre is like a mega courtyard, cutting between the tall buildings, transforming a patch of concrete hidden from the street by a few trees into an inviting green space visible and open to the public. The lawn, planted with native prairie and wetland prairie seed mixes, and the 300-plus trees should soak up hundreds of thousands of gallons of water per year.

Our Lake Geneva site sits on the shores of Geneva Lake with ample woodlands, wetlands and open fields to explore. The property shares it's boundary with Big Foot Beach State Park which offers amazing marshes and bogs.
