Diggin' It

Soil is constantly being created by the weathering of bedrock. Expansion and contraction of this bedrock is caused by the seasonal freezing and thawing of the ground. Additionally, the earth is heated by the sun each day and cools each night. This causes further weathering. Plant matter also contributes to the formation of soil. Constant decomposition of this plant material, especially roots, by microbes, fungus, bacteria, and worms contributes to the creation of rich, organic matter.
