Michael Grubb lecture 6 Dec, Climate Policy journal, projects, Howard Bamsey at GCF

We are very pleased to host Professor Michael Grubb of UCL at ANU on 6 December, for a lecture titled 'Delivering the energy transition in theory and practice'. Very topical, and highly recommended. Michael Grubb is a doyen of climate change policy, with a huge contribution to the literature and involvement in many policy processes. Please register if you can come. While here Professor Grubb will also have meetings with governments, and give talks in Melbourne, Adelaide and Sydney.

I am excited to say that the academic journal Climate Policy from next year will be partly at home at ANU Crawford School. I will be joint editor-in-chief, together with Professor Harald Winker of University of Cape Town and Dr Joanna Depledge of Cambridge University. We are taking over from Michael Grubb, and we feel that those are big shoes to fill. Michael wrote a farewell editorial reflecting on 15 years of the journal and what happened in climate policy during that time. Michael will stay involved as Founding Editor.

In project news, I’ve had opportunity to discuss research that will be developed under our new Coal Transitions project at a Senate inquiry and at several conferences. We will also start a new collaboration with partners in China on market mechanisms for climate policy, more on this soon.

The biggest topic of discussion on climate policy in recent weeks has of course been what the Trump Presidency might mean for US and global climate policy. I shared my initial thoughts here. CCEP associate Dr Luke Kemp has much to say about this, as he has researched the very question of a US withdrawal from international climate policy. See his paper ‘US proofing the Paris Climate Agreement’, published right around the time of Trump’s election, and a recent oped.

On the question of Australia’s electricity sector and carbon dioxide emissions from it, CCEP associate Dr Hugh Saddler has published a number of recent analyses. They’re linked from various opeds listed here, including ‘Records fall as wind, hydro match brown coal generation in October’.

Finally, warm congratulations to our ANU colleague and CCEP research associate Honorary Professor Howard Bamsey on being appointed Executive Director of the Green Climate Fund. This is a crucial position for international climate policy, and as Robin Davies over at the Development Policy Centre wrote, Howard has ‘quite a job ahead of him’.
