The Blessing of Community

These wintery months are a time to settle into the normal routine of life. However, we hope that part of our normal routine is a continual discovery of our extraordinary Lord! Even at a Bible school one can lose sight of Jesus amidst the normal and mundane. It is such a blessing to have a community here that encourages each other to never stop searching His word daily, to keep putting our faith into action, and to continually praise the Lord.

Youth Retreat!

The first weekend in February got a little wild as students hosted CQBC’s annual youth retreat! This year, 23 youth joined us for the weekend--many from our local youth groups, but some from as far away as Montreal and Ontario. The days were jam-packed with lots of energy, activities and fun! Together we dug into the Bible as Ryan Lee, a youth pastor from Montreal, came to share from Galatians 5. It’s from this chapter that the theme for the weekend came - “Walk with Me”.

“So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the Flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.” Galatians 5:16-17. Jesus has not just called us to walk away from our sin but to walk with Him in the Spirit. As it says in Galatians 5:24-25, “Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit”.

Jesus has saved us from our sin and our flesh, something we were powerless to do ourselves. However, He didn’t stop there! “It was for freedom that Christ has set us free” (Galatians 5:1) - freedom from the control of our sinful desires. Jesus calls us to walk with him, to keep in step with the Spirit instead of the Flesh. This too is only by His power. We took this weekend with the youth to search out what it means to really live by the Spirit, to go deeper into our relationship with Jesus, and to answer His call to “walk with me”.

It was encouraging to see the work of the Lord on so many levels over the weekend! The students gained experience in how to lead and organize a retreat, while being able to connect with local youth. It was a great opportunity for the youth to set apart time to go deeper into their faith or even to hear the gospel for the first time. They also enjoyed being invested in by those a few years older than them. God used this weekend to call us all to walk with Him and enjoy the freedom found in Christ!  If you or youth you know missed this weekend, make a note on your calendar now to participate next year: January 31-February 1, 2020!

Snow, Snow, and More Snow!

With around 200 cm of snow this year already, our property has been taken over by Quebec’s famous winters! Though our faithful maintenance crew works hard at keeping the snow under control during the week, Wednesday work day always comes with plenty of shovelling opportunities for our students. The snow does bring work, but it is a part of Quebec that we would never trade. Students and staff spend many Saturdays skiing and snowboarding at Ski Montcalm (just 5 minutes away), and snowshoeing, ice skating, and broomball are also activities we have the opportunity to enjoy in the beautiful Lanaudière region where we live. In addition to fun, the snow also provides opportunities to bless our neighbors, as the students’ weekly Community Help outreach team shovels the roofs and houses of those in need. As we pause to consider the winter wonderland we see around us, we find God’s spectacular creation to be truly breathtaking!

Meet Jessica

Hello, my name is Jessica Dolby. I am from St. Thomas, Ontario, but am now so happy to be attending school here at Capernwray. I decided to come to Capernwray after a long, spiritually dry period of my life. I was distant with God, more focused on the world and what I wanted. But, thankfully, He never lets go and He reigned me back in. He pushed me to come here where I have been able to redirect my focus to Christ, become engaged in the living Word, and try to fill the hunger I have to know my God better. I decided to come to Capernwray because I needed to learn to be confident in Christ and prepared to live my life for Him.

One of the many important things that God has taught me over the past months is that He is looking for availability, not capability. God is not looking for someone with a stacked resume who has somehow figured out how to be perfect. He is looking for me, just as I am because it is God who lives in us and who transforms. God is only looking that I am open and submit to whatever He has for my life, so that He can be displayed and glorified. Philippians 2:13 says, "For it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure." It is not my works or my efforts that will get me far or build my relationship with God, but my willingness to make Him the centre of my life as well as the leader. Christ is not only my Saviour, but my Lord; He must come before anything else. In putting Him first (which I still find challenging to this day) and submitting to Him, I will continue to grow and continue to testify to the majesty and love of Christ. I am excited to continue to practice putting Him first here at Capernwray and cannot wait to see what else God has in store for me.

At CQBC, we recognize that we can not continue this ministry alone and are so thankful for all those around the world who support us in many ways! Please continue to pray with us. Pray for:

  • The wedding and marriage ceremony of Chris Conway and Christiana McMaster (two past staff at CQBC), on February 16, 2019.  CQBC is privileged to host this special day for them! May the Lord be glorified in their lives and marriage as they continue to pursue Christ together.

  • For staff and students to have boldness in sharing Jesus with the opportunities God gives us!
