BioCycle Energy: Integrated Biogas Alliance Platform To Derisk
Biogas Projects
Composting Trends In 2020
Organics disposal bans and tackling contamination are among the leading trends, nationally and regionally.
At the end of 2019, BioCycle editors contacted national and regional composting stakeholders to ask about the 2 most important trends that influenced the composting industry in their region, or nationwide, in 2019 — and if they see those trends continuing in 2020. We also asked about new trends they are tracking in 2020, and if they see changes on the horizon that will offset or mitigate 2 major impediments — siting and financing — to developing new composting infrastructure. Finally, with the dawning of a new decade, we were curious about the single most significant advancement in the composting sector in the 2010s. And, of course, for a prediction: What will that advancement be in the 2020s?
EDITORIAL
Let’s Connect
Welcome to the inaugural edition of BioCycle CONNECT®, the new BioCycle for a new decade. We’ll be coming to you just about every week in 2020 with new and timely content on organics recycling projects, programs, policies, and practices — as well as dust off some oldies but goodies from BioCycle’s 60 years of article archives.

For readers of BioCycle in print, you’ll see some familiar features in BioCycle CONNECT, starting with a Table of Contents in the upper right-hand corner. We are continuing our news departments — BioCycle World, Composting Roundup, Anaerobic Digest and Equipment News — and Sally Brown’s popular Connections column. Each department, as well as our feature articles, continue on our website, BioCycle.net. We’ve been interviewing facility operators, investors, project developers, policymakers and others to gather insights on organics recycling industry trends, markets and expansion opportunities. We’ll report what we’ve learned (and continue to learn) in BioCycle CONNECT over the coming weeks and months.

SALLY BROWN'S CONNECTIONS
Compost + Cannabis
Growing cannabis is now a legal business in a majority of the U.S. and all of Canada. Sales in Washington State (one of 10 where recreational use is legal and one of 7 where sales are taxed) in 2018 totaled $534 million. By comparison, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service, the turfgrass industry in the U.S. is a $40 billion industry. Kentucky blue grass typically depends on high rates of N, P and K as well as irrigation to keep lawns green and lush.
BIOCYCLE BRIEFS
BIOCYCLE WORLD
Florida Needs More Organics For 2020 Goal
In 2010, the Florida Legislature set a 75% statewide recycling goal for MSW to be achieved by 2020 (403.706, Florida Statute).  The statute allows electricity produced from MSW (via waste-to-energy) or landfill gas to count towards the recycling rate, in the form of credits.
COMPOSTING ROUNDUP
Applying Compost
To Sequester Carbon
A thin layer of compost was applied on a 10-acre sloped section of rangeland in early December in the Altamont Hills east of Livermore, California, kicking off a carbon farming study. The land is part of a 1,600-acre property owned by StopWaste (the Alameda County Waste Management Authority) in the East Bay.
ANAEROBIC DIGEST
Food Waste Recycling At WWTP
The Hermitage, Pennsylvania municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) underwent a major upgrade in 2014, that included installation of a thermophilic anaerobic digester to produce a Class A biosolids. The facility also expanded its capacity to receive high strength organics, including liquid food waste, packaged consumer food waste, fats, oils and grease.

BIOCYCLE ENERGY
Four biogas technology companies joined forces on a nonexclusive basis late last year to provide the global biogas industry with a “soup to nuts” suite of equipment and systems for production of biogas from organic waste streams. The Integrated Biogas Alliance's (IBA) founding Members are Eisenmann Corp. (Chicago, U.S.), Entsorga (Milan, Italy), Greenlane Renewables (Vancouver, Canada) and Tietjen (Hamburg, Germany). For combined heat and power (CHP), IBA’s Partner is AB Energy (Orzinuovi, Italy). More recently, Symbiont Science, Engineering and Construction, Inc. (Milwaukee, U.S.) — an EPC contractor (Engineering, Procurement, Construction) focused on renewable natural gas (RNG) and renewable energy projects, and Clean Fuel Partners (Madison, U.S.) — anaerobic digestion (AD) operations and maintenance (O&M) specialists, have also joined IBA as Partners.
