"Development of a Human iPSC Cardiomyocyte-Based Scoring System for Cardiac Hazard Identification in Early Drug Safety De-risking"

Janssen screened 64 reference compounds and 587 new chemical entities (NCE) with the calcium transient assay using our Cor.4U® CardioPlate™ 96 and compared the obtained data to hERG assay, ex-planted heart tissue, Langendorff perfused hearts and clinical data. Hua Rong Lu’s group generated a prediction model for cardiac safety based on their findings.

2018 Highlights

A selection of the most popular topics from 2018.

As part of a new interview series whereby we introduce you to members of the Ncardia team, this issue we chat with Johan te Koppele, Ncardia's Chief Services Officer.
Q1. Johan, thank you very much for taking part in this issue's interview feature. You have recently joined the Ncardia team. Could you tell us a little bit about your career to date and what attracted you to Ncardia?
Contributing to the quality of life of people has been my drive from early on. Medicines take a central role there. That’s why I attended the School of Pharmacy. For two decades I researched pharmacology and toxicology in a broad range of disease areas; oncology, cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, and inflammatory diseases. All these years I provided contract research services to pharma and biotech companies to support their drug development.

I am excited about Ncardia’s stem cell technology to facilitate drug development. I believe the transition of Ncardia’s high level of science into contract research holds great value for our clients. The higher the level of our science is, the higher is the value for our clients.
Q2. How would you describe your job to a child?

We help in the making of new drugs to treat sick patients.
Q3. What does a typical day look like for you?

I facilitate my colleagues to do what they need to do. This means, a lot of ‘connecting’. Listening, talking, emailing. So that we deliver a real team result. Help Sales & Business Development to have proposals for clients and get the contracts in. Arrange that contract research projects are executed properly. All with the mindset: do the right thing. And do it right. Smartly. Take the additional step. So that we have impressed and happy clients.

Q4. What is your favorite way to unwind?

We like to walk our dogs at the beach. By now they are 11 weeks and 1 year old. When they are a bit older the dogs can join us horseback riding in the dunes.

Q5. What is your favorite song or quote and what does it mean to you?

Most of the songs by Coldplay and U2 are on my list of favorites. I remain impressed how 4 musicians work together for decades. New songs, balanced, harmonious, emotional and engaged. Everone has an indispensable contribution to the team result.
