Newsletter #7: New Years News

We are back at it after a very brief vacation over the holidays. We had some time to reflect on the past year, solidify our goals for this coming year and our well on our way to making 2016 a big year for Shape of the World.

It's been some time since our last proper newsletter (although if you are a Kickstarter backer you will have gotten our campaign updates here). One of our resolutions should be to keep you more up to date with our progress in anticipation of our release this year!

December and January have been a busy time for content creation. Our team (which has expanded) has made a ton of new assets (mainly models, music and SFX) that are currently being implemented into the game. At the same time, Stu has been filling in the blanks of the world to create a functional playthrough of the entire game, and refining the core design so it’s pleasurable to explore.

At the end of this design pass, we will have a Pre-Alpha build in February (for a select group of colleagues) and an Alpha build later in the spring (for a larger group). This of course all leads toward a Beta version that will come out later in the spring, which was one of the rewards available to backers. We can’t wait to share it with you and get your feedback!

New Game Mechanics

Stu has been modifying the gameplay design to more foster exploration. In the process, he’s building an answer to those people who ask “yeah, looks great, but what do you DO?!?” The game has become more interactive, more structured, and more musical. There will be plenty to do, or not do, depending on your mindset. (Meditation mode?!?)

New Connections

We’ve had the pleasure of meeting more of the indie community. In November we gave a small downtown tour of Vancouver and its scene to the fabulous guys at Forerunner Magazine. They are traveling for their own adventure, a website and magazine ambitiously tagged as “Think National Geographic, For Video Games.” We’ve sent off a few more submissions to festivals which should hopefully see us making a few appearances across North America this year.

Just the other day we made an appearance on Only SP’s “Definitive List of 100+ Single Player Games Coming in 2016” so it looks like we have no choice but make our 2016 resolution come true and get Shape of the World into your hands! Some of the other games we are excited about include games by @alightinchorus, @AbzuGame, @unravel_game, @BeforeGame, and @RiMEGame.

2016 looks like it is the year of exploration! Thanks for following along on our journey.
