Sharon after surgery

Sharon is Home

I've never seen her smile so big!  Sharon Kusasira returned to Uganda on Wednesday evening and her father brought her to see us on Thursday. As we approached the office, Sharon's face lit up; she and her father both gave us big hugs and said so many words of thanks. All of us were praising God for the amazing work He has done in Sharon's life.  As they arrived home the evening before, a crowd of family members and neighbors had gathered. Some of them had expected to receive a dead body, not an energetic, happy girl.

Heart surgery.  The cost was beyond imagination.  The procedure couldn't even be done in this country.  The wait had been more than a year.  The surgery itself had revealed a congenital defect that required stopping Sharon's heart completely for over 10 minutes during surgery to repair the situation.  This was only God's doing.  The Lord kindly allowed many of us to take part in His work.

Sharon seems quite proud of the huge zipper scar down her chest.  It will take time to heal.  It will take time to put healthy weight on her slender body.  It will take time for her heart and lungs to be completely restored.  Don't rush the hand of God.

Now 20 years old, Sharon wants to complete Primary 7 (the last year of elementary school), which is where she had to stop due to her heart condition. One of the surgeons said that Sharon was one of their favorite patients ever.  Two doctors offered to bring her back to Kenya for further studies.  Sharon aspires to be a nurse some day and Tenwek Hospital just happens to have a nursing school attached to it.  For now, she is going to rest for a month then try to enroll in P7 so that she can move forward toward those future goals.

Sharon bears in her body the scars that testify to the incomprehensible gift of life, by the redemption of an old defective heart, which is a work that only God can do. The road has been hard, but that's not a bad testimony.  Not a bad testimony at all.

Praise the Name of the Lord our God!
