Dear <<First Name>>:

We hope that you have enjoyed a nice summer and managed to stay cool amidst the constant heat.

In this month's RPG Planner, we link to our quarterly investment commentary that explains how moving to the forward tees is likely the best solution in the current investment environment.  We also offer some timely resources and provide suggestions on the overlooked but critical decision of retirement plan beneficiaries.  We hope you find it all useful.

Investment Commentary

Global stocks were buoyed in July by a resolution (or at least a temporary patch) to the situation in Greece, ending the month with a small gain (MSCI World +0.8%).  Aside from the end of brinkmanship in Greece, positive earnings news and an uptick in domestic and European economic data served as positive catalysts for stocks.

July was also headlined by the sharp bursting of the Chinese stock market.  The world's second largest economy saw its stock market decline by 11% in July, it's worst month since 2008.  Other emerging markets also experienced sharp losses as falling commodity prices, a strengthening US dollar, and the threat of contracting Chinese consumer demand all weighed on investors.  Latin American stocks fell by 8.4% in the month and Far East emerging markets lost 8.3%.

Bond markets remained focused on the potential for an impending Federal Reserve rate hike.  Economic data was not robust enough in July to make a September rate hike inevitable but not weak enough to remove the possibility.  Global bonds suffered a decline in July but domestic bonds as measured by the Barclays Aggregate gained 0.4%.

We encourage reading our recent quarterly investment commentary for views on the low interest rate environment and high stock market valuations.  You can also reference the RPG Monthly Market Snapshot by clicking here for some key economic data points and index returns.

No one likes to talk about death or disability and so planning for such scenarios is often overlooked.  Do yourself a favor and take time to review your estate planning documents.  If it has been more than five years since you updated these documents, they are probably in need of review given the dramatic changes in estate law.  We frequently review such documents using this checklist template and are happy to review your existing documents to see if any updates are appropriate.
