Newsletter from Free UK Genealogy, a charity acting as an umbrella organisation for FreeBMD, FreeREG and FreeCEN.

Welcome to the Free UK Genealogy Newsletter.

Our projects continue to thrive thanks to the hard work and dedication of our many volunteers.
FreeREG has grown so much recently; we want to keep you updated with the many improvements that are being made, and also encourage you to give your opinions on what is happening over there.

In the FreeREG database:

  • There are 35,500,016 records
  • There are 36 counties being transcribed
  • Over the last year we have averaged 249,194 new records every 4 weeks
*We now also support wildcards in our searches!*

For a journey such as FreeREG is on, a navigation tool is essential! Here are our plans for the coming months:

FreeREG website

We would really appreciate your feedback on our FreeREG websites, particularly if you choose to use the old version over the newer, more complete website. Please complete this short survey comparing the two versions.

Special request - can you help?

Do you have (free) storage space that Free UK Gen could use?
We have boxes of digitized materials which are currently occupying 1.5 Ikea Kallax units:
We are digitizing Wills for a future project, and need to store the volumes (about 30cm x 40cm), once they have been transcribed. We currently need about 2m of shelf space for the books which have already been scanned, but eventually will need up to 60m.
FreeBMD is going strong, with records from the later 1970s being transcribed, and the 250 million distinct records mark passed.  We have recently been concentrating on ensuring that all corrections are made, so that FreeBMD can continue to be the most accurate transcription of the GRO index.
We are delighted with a new tool (MacBMD-X) for Mac users which works with the latest Mac operating systems, and recent updates to the tools (WinBMD Version 8.1.0 and BMDVerify Version 3.1.2) for windows transcribers- both of which work with Windows 10.
Last month on FreeCEN, we added 95 Census Pieces totalling 464,608 individuals.

That brings us up to a total of 30,691,787 individuals online.

Development of the FreeCEN2 software is progressing. Testing has been going well.
