SEPTEMBER 2018

Dear <<First Name>>,

2018 is hurtling along at a great rate and inevitably, thoughts start to turn to next year – what are we going to do, where are we going to go?

Naturally, The Active Gourmet Travel is happy to help you make these choices, and don’t forget we can assist with cruises too whether an ocean or river cruise, or leasing a canal boat in France, Italy or Germany. One of my best weeks was spent on a rental boat on the Venice Lagoon, nosing into the tiny islands and eating local produce. The peace and sense of infinite space were truly unforgettable.

Ciao,
Gail, Hubert and the team

2018 Puglia trip
Our trip to Puglia in mid-May showed us the ancient Greeks and Romans were seldom wrong – they always chose the best sites for their settlements. Great food, wonderful scenery, friendly people, plentiful sunshine, Puglia has it all. Our 13 day escorted tour visited the three main sub-regions. Cooking schools, walking and biking were all on the agenda.

Don’t miss the 2019 Essential Puglia tour starting on 20 May.

For other trips in the first part of 2019, visit the escorted tours on our website.
It’s time to choose your travel destinations and dates more carefully
It is becoming more important to be aware that many of the places you are wanting to visit are also on everyone else’s wish list.
Recently, people waiting to get into the Palace of Versailles have had to wait three hours to get to the front of the queue. We’ve heard similar stories elsewhere including the Trooping of the Colour in London and lines around the block to get into the Vatican Museums. In Amsterdam, locals are planning to leave because the sheer volume of visitors is destroying their neighbourhoods and the local tourist board in Cornwall is trying to discourage people from visiting.

When planning your visits to places like the Eiffel Tower, Versailles or the Coliseum, book your times before you leave home. Even better, make those times early, before the buses arrive.
Give yourself more time to see popular towns, and remember, European summers are becoming much hotter. Try to travel before July and August, but if it is unavoidable, plan to be out of the sun for several hours in the middle of the day, especially in Spain and Portugal. Carry plenty of water, and buy a fan and a chilled Evian water spray.

Make life even easier – use the services of The Active Gourmet Travel for all your travel arrangements.  We will design you a trip that removes hassles, keeps you near budget, and most importantly, lets you see the real country away from the madding crowds.
Airline info
The majority of airlines will be looking to release their Early Bird fares in the next couple of weeks. We will keep you posted.
More airlines are looking at making wi-fi available on international flights. Studies show that 81% of passengers would be very keen to use this service and 51% say they would even give up the free drink to be able to have wi-fi access.

Korean Air
have just released fares effective to 30 June 2019. They range from $1335 for an economy fare to Europe, and from $5210 for business class. All passengers overnight at a Seoul Airport hotel on the way north and this cost is included in the airfare.
Unusual accommodation
Edinburgh
A former Northern Lighthouse Board ship is being turned into a luxury hotel.  “Fingal”, with 23 exquisitely appointed cabins, is set to be permanently berthed in the port of Leith adjacent to the Royal Yacht Britannia.  Its double height ballroom will provide another venue for Edinburgh’s exclusive events.
