This Week at BHS

JUNIOR NIGHT IS THURSDAY!

On Thurs. Jan. 21 at 6:30 pm, Junior Night will include a presentation for both 11th grade students and their parents, caretakers, and guardians. The BHS Guidance Dept. will provide information on post high school planning, focusing on the college search and application process.  Zoom Link is here, Meeting ID: 914 4049 7278 Passcode: 775945.
 

THE BROOKLINE FOOD PANTRY NEEDS OUR SUPPORT! 

Please support the Brookline Food Pantry this week.  The pantry is experiencing extreme demand as food insecurity is on the rise due to the pandemic.  Food donation boxes are located in the UA building and Atrium at 115 Greenough.  Food should not be opened and not expired.  No perishable food items please.
 

WHEN THE S*** HITS THE FAN: PARENTING DURING THE PANDEMIC

A virtual conversation with Joani Geltman on Mon. Jan. 25, 7 p.m.  Zoom link is here

Parenting expert Joani Geltman MSW, is a clinician, parenting coach, college professor, and public speaker with over 30 years of experience. Using humor and storytelling, Joani will provide parents /caregivers of teens and tweens with a "goody bag" of practical insight and helpful techniques for parenting through these unprecedented challenges. She will address such issues as screen use, recognizing the difference between COVID blues and clinical depression, and strategies for managing social isolation and self-care.

BHS DRIVE THROUGH FOOD DRIVE 

BHS Drive Through Food Drive - Next Sunday - January 24th
Please help ensure that all BHS families have enough food by donating to the next BHS Drive Through Food Drive!  

Food Drop-off:  Sun, Jan. 24, 9 am to noon at the  main entrance of BHS at 115 Greenough St
Volunteers will be there later (3:00 pm at the latest) organizing and delivering, but please drop off as early in the day as you can. Details: Drive down Greenough, stop your car in front of BHS, and put your items on the sidewalk in the designated drop zone. We will take it from there. We will all keep our distance and follow safety precautions.  Items Needed can be found here

Families: Currently, 48 BHS families are being assisted by the BHS Food Drives and, it is not too late to receive help for your family.  Just reach out directly to Joslyn Vendola at joslyn_vendola@psbma.org to be placed on the list.

As these drives have gained momentum, we have many people interested in volunteering and we will continue to abide by health and safety measures.

ACE APPLICATION PROCESS BEGINS

This week, ACE is officially launching the application process for enrollment next September 2021.  ACE, s a small, competency-based program for 55 students, grades 10-12, within BHS. Learn more at ACE Your Way
 
If your child is interested in exploring ACE, they need to schedule an appointment to do a Zoom information  meeting and then a Zoom classroom visit.  Please schedule this with ACE Secretary:  Christine_Carruthers@psbma.org
 
On Wed., Feb. 3rd at 7pm, ACE will  host an ACE Information Night for Parents.  The  Zoom link is here.

ACE applications must be submitted no later than Fri., March 5th and will be considered on a first come, first serve basis.  Find link here.

9th GRADE PARENT MEETING

Please mark your calendars for the next CO '24 parent meeting which will be held virtually on Wed. Feb. 3, at 7pm. The meeting, facilitated by B-PEN (Brookline Parent Education Network), will give parents the opportunity to talk together about how we are managing different challenges of parenting in these times. Look for a future email with further details and the Zoom link
 

JUNIOR PARENT MEETING GUIDANCE RECAP

Thank you to Lenny Libenzon (BHS College Counselor) and Darby Neff-Verre who offered information about the transition to Junior year and answer our questions about the role of BHS Guidance.

SENIOR YEARBOOK AND PORTRAIT INFORMATION 

To appear in the yearbook, seniors may submit a portrait, baby picture, quote, and activities by Jan. 31, 2021, in this google form. Please include a selfie so we can create a senior class group picture. For important dates and information related to  the yearbook, go to this video or slideshow.  

Seniors may make an appointment for a photoshoot with Prestige Portraits here or with a student photographer by emailing brooklinelens@gail.com.  If you have any questions, contact lori_lynn@psbma.org.
 

GUIDANCE INFORMATION

For information from guidance, go here. Individual student information can be viewed on the Aspen Portal.  Quarter 2 ends on Jan. 25;  Report cards will be posted Feb. 8. (No mid-terms this year.)
 

TEENS & SCREENS – WHEN TO LIGHTEN UP, WHEN TO WORRY

The holidays offered adolescents a much-needed break from school demads and hours of required online classes, which can be overwhelming. The New Year brings an ideal opportunity for a post-holiday reset of habits and attitudes. Check out B-PEN’s new tip sheet, which includes expert recommendations for healthy screen habits during the school week.

The Brookline School Committee will meet Thurs. Jan. 21, 2021 at 6 pm. Agenda and Zoom link will be  here.
 

WOMEN AT THE CENTER KICK-OFF

The Brookline Center's Women at the Center's Kickoff will be Feb. 4 at 7 pm.  Mia Birdsong is the keynote. For more information, go here.

BROOKLINE ART CENTER OFFERINGS 

The Brookline Arts Center (BAC) provides a variety of creative opportunities for all ages. Our winter virtual program runs from January to March. We have classes for ages 5-17 in painting, drawing, comics, sculpture, ceramics, ArtVentures and more!  We also offer Customized Group Classes & Private Lessons. Please contact our staff with any questions at office@brooklineartscenter.com. The Brookline High School Parent Teacher Organization is committed to supporting important communications between school and home. It sponsors a variety of events each year designed to show support of the school and to keep parents informed about how to help their children make the most of the BHS experience.
