From the BHS Headmaster

Dear BHS Parents and Guardians,

This past Friday I had the pleasure of seeing student presentations related to "Learning Landscapes," a project in Donna Sartanowicz's Drawing for Understanding in Field Science class at BHS.  Within this unit, students worked in groups to re-design under-utilized outdoor spaces around the high school as part of the renovation and expansion process while enhancing or expanding the learning in one of our courses, programs, or initiatives.  Not surprisingly, their efforts impressed and inspired.

I am often wary of edu-speak, but Learning Landscapes offered students a project-based, interdisciplinary and collaborative learning approach to address real-world challenges.  What do all those buzz words look like in action?

Students worked in groups on various thematic approaches to outdoor spaces of their choosing. We saw a Meditation Garden, a Bird and Butterfly Garden, an Edible Garden, an Art Garden, and a Socratic Amphitheater.  Students researched plants and materials, considered usage and accessibility, wrote proposals, designed site maps, and created plant profiles to articulate their design decisions. On Friday, students presented well, reflected on their work and learning, and generally filled our second floor Art Space with positive engagement.

Learning Landscapes will remain in the Art Space until winter break.  Come take a look at how our Warrior Art Scientists/Scientific Artists address how to extend learning and growth to dormant outdoor spaces.  It is great work by students and the teacher.

Take care,

This Week At BHS

School Council Openings

There are currently two open parent positions on the Brookline High School Council. As mandated by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, the School Council, a representative, school building-based committee composed of the principal, parents, faculty, students and a community member, assists the headmaster in preparing a school improvement plan to enact the high school and district strategic plans.

School Council parent representatives are chosen by the BHS parent body through an election administered by the PTO. Parents may nominate themselves or another parent, and the highest vote getters will serve a 2-year term. All candidates are asked to submit a brief biographical sketch, due on Friday, December 16th, that will be available prior to the vote. Elections will take place the week of December 19th - 23rd and results will be announced after Winter Break.

If this is something that interests you, please contact the PTO co-presidents. Interim Headmaster Anthony Meyer, will communicate more about the school council, and other topics, via a Blackboard update tomorrow.
