Dear Brookline High School Parents, Guardians, and Caregivers,

Thanksgiving Week: 11/22-24
We slide into Thanksgiving this week - thank goodness. Here is our special schedule, courtesy of Mason Laboratories:

BHS Athletics
I still am riding the highs of Saturday's division one state cross country meet in Wrentham and the boys soccer state championship game in Lynn later that day.

Our boys cross country team took second place and the girls captured fourth. Individually, Greg Auditore placed in eighth, Alex Peterson ninth, and Lucia Werner fifteenth - all medalists for Brookline High School. The camaraderie and race culture offered many sights to behold after a year-plus of so few in-person events. Our Warriors ran hard and fast, pushing their personal bests and also hung around in tents, eating.

Saturday at Manning Field, our boys varsity soccer team did something no other Brookline High School team had done (to my knowledge): win a state championship. It was an incredibly close game. The team stayed calm, the fans never lost their voices (not even Lyle), and BHS won in the second over-time with a beautiful goal.

If you missed the warrior state championship win, it will remain posted courtesy of play-by-play videographer and BHS Alum Jesse Mayfield-Sheehan. Huge props to Jesse, to our SuperFans and Ann Collins, BHS librarian, for riding the fan bus to Lynn and back. Brookline High showed up for a championship event and took home the trophies, medals, and elation. So fun.

We will have more athletic good news to share soon; for now, I am grateful that our teams had such success this year and that so many athletes are Bay State honorees.

As we return from Thanksgiving break, my team and I will offer updates on our midyear plans and schedule and our renovation and expansion project progress. The short version is that we're moving toward completion on various fronts.

I hope every one of us has time this week to relax and rejuvenate with family and friends and sometimes also on our own. It has been a busy first few months of school, and we are settling into the rhythm of learning and teaching. A little break will do us all a favor, providing oxygen for the short, dark days of December. We - can - do - it....

Take care,

This Week at BHS

The BHS PTO is seeking an additional class representative for the Class of '23. Class reps sit on the PTO executive board and serve through the graduation of the class. Each class has three reps, so duties are shared and collaborative. If you are interested in being considered or want more information, please email with the grades and schools of your children.

In conjunction with the new BHS interdisciplinary course, "Climate Science and Social Change," the BHS library is creating a dedicated  "Climate Change and Environmental Justice" corner and book collection.  The collection will include non-fiction, climate fiction and board games.  The BHS librarians invite BHS community members to help build this collection by purchasing items from the BHS Library Amazon wishlist, making this a collection built by our community.  While you're there, please choose the BHS PTO as your charity in the Amazon Smile program and every purchase you make earns money to benefit BHS students and teachers!

The PTO annual appeal is underway. PTO relies on donations from families like yours to fund our support of programming, resources, and teacher grants with direct impact on the learning and experiences of BHS students. If you've already donated this year, thank you. If not, please take a minute to donate now at this link or by sending a check to BHS PTO, 115 Greenough Street,  02445.

BHS Upcoming / Ongoing

B-PEN continues to hear that Brookline families are concerned about mental health these days, especially regarding our youth.  In fact, the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and the Children’s Hospital Association (CHA) have come together to declare a National State of Emergency in Children’s Mental Health, acknowledging the urgency of widespread challenges facing children and adolescents. While direct services are often limited, information and resources ARE readily available. Check out our mental health care list and  Mental Health Care in Adolescents on the B-PEN webpage.

The BHS Rowing Team is looking for new rowers and coxswains.  All students are invited to participate in Friends of Brookline Rowing's preseason winter training program.  Come workout and learn about rowing as the team prepares for another fun and exciting spring racing season.  No experience is necessary.  The program is the best way for new athletes to prepare for the upcoming spring tryouts.  Participants will learn the basics of rowing and get into great shape for racing in the spring.  Practices for the winter preseason will begin on January 3rd and continue through February 25th.  For more information and access to registration please go to this link: New Rower Winter Registration

Students (or adults) looking for volunteer hours? Brookline Thrives has many volunteer opportunities for adults and students ages 15+. Help pack bags, restock inventory, or deliver Thrives bags to classrooms in the K-8 schools. Learn more and sign up

Show your school spirit with BHS branded merchandise! A variety of clothing styles are available at this link. Stickers and magnets (perfect for cars!) are available at in-person PTO-sponsored events. Keep your eyes open for future announcements about additional types of BHS merch.

BHS Winter Sports registration is now open at this link.  Registration deadline November 24th. Practices and tryouts for winter sports begin on Monday, November 29th.  A reminder to athletes and families that physicals must be within 13 months current and the best method for expediting athlete clearance is to upload a copy of the physical exam form in the "Participant Information" section of the FamilyID registration.  Payment will not be due until rosters are settled.  There is no online payment option at this time.
