Table of Contents

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Caregivers,

I hope you have had nice Winter Breaks with your students and families. We begin again our Brookline High School efforts in a shortened week and then have about three weeks until Midyear Examinations (Wednesday 1/25 to Friday 1/27). Quarter three starts the week of 1/30-2/3.

We thus return to Brookline High School with a certain amount of urgency (i.e., midyears and end of semester approaching), recognizing our students often return to us with a bit of a post-break malaise. They will let us know that they are tired and unaccustomed to our hours of operation. We will try to remain cheerful and optimistic as we exhort our youthful charges to engage, focus, participate, produce, and the like.

And so we begin 2023, the better half (plus) of the 2022-23 school year. We can do this…

Sincerely,

Anthony

MESSAGE FROM THE PTO CO-PRESIDENTS:

On behalf of the PTO officers and board, happy new year to BHS families and staff! We're grateful for everyone's support of our students in 2022 and look forward to working together in 2023 to further BHS as a caring and engaging learning community.

Best,

MESSAGE FROM B-PEN (Brookline Parent Education Network)

SMALL CONVERSATIONS MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE
When it comes to issues of concern, from healthy relationships to substance use, lots of brief, more casual conversations can be more effective than ‘THE BIG TALK.’ B-PEN suggests a great, short primer on getting the ball rolling… https://www.samhsa.gov/talk-they-hear-you/parent-resources/small-conversations and another to help with outlining goals … https://www.samhsa.gov/talk-they-hear-you/parent-resources/five-conversation-goals.

PARENT FEEDBACK NEEDED

The PTO is organizing an opportunity for parents/guardians to give feedback to the plan that BHS administrators have written to guide the school-based response to incidents of hate (racism, anti-Semitism, homophobia, etc.) at BHS. Please keep an eye out in January for announcements in the Blast and from your class reps with the date and time for this event.

If you are interested in helping to plan and run the event, please email copresidents.bhs.pto@gmail.com

SOCIAL STUDIES EQUITY REVIEW

The BHS Social Studies curriculum is undergoing an equity review, and parent involvement is a critical part of the process. There are two ways for you to engage with BHS faculty, students, and consultants in this important work:
    •    Respond to the survey that was circulated last week via email - click HERE.
    •    Participate in a parent focus group in January - fill out THIS FORM to be placed on a list of interested parents. Once the focus group session is scheduled, BHS faculty will reach out with more information. Please note that there may be space constraints, so filling out the form doesn't guarantee that you'll be called.

BROOKLINE GREENZINE

Check out the Fall '22 issue of Greenzine Brookline, complete with interviews to editorials to art to poetry. This is our biggest issue yet, with new articles and art submitted by kids, teachers and parents from K-12 across the schools of PSB.

BASKETBALL RECREATION LEAGUE

The High School Recreation League is designed to bring another fun level of Basketball to High Schoolers looking for something to do in the Winter.  This league is for students in grades 9-12 who attend a Brookline public or private school.  Grades/genders may be combined depending on registration numbers.  Players can fill out their form and make one teammate request.  These requests are not guaranteed, but we will try our best to honor them.  Teams will have one, 1-hour game per week (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday).  It is recommended that each team has a parent volunteer coach, but is not required. Students can register HERE.
