The Weekly Blast ---- September 4, 2016

From the BHS Headmaster

Dear Brookline High School Parents and Guardians,

We have had a terrific first two days of school, thanks to the hard work of many.  On Thursday, our ninth grade processional was a beautiful sight: 493 new Warriors walking from Cypress Field into the quadrangle and passing through a welcoming, cheering gauntlet of BHS teachers and staff.  It is the best way for us to begin the school year: demonstrating our unity as a faculty and, more importantly, showing our new students how excited we are to work with and support them.  A terrific assembly followed with inspirational speeches by the ninth grade deans, Lisa Redding and Melanee Alexander, as well as some brief words from several junior mentors and me.

Later in the day the Brookline Rotary collaborated with our BHS food service staff, our sophomore PTO representatives, and B-Good to put on a superb barbecue for ninth graders, new tenth to twelfth graders, and faculty and staff.  It is a major undertaking and yet seems like a labor of love for all.  I offer my sincere thanks to all who contributed: it was welcoming, well-run, and delicious!

Friday went well, too.  Thanks to the generous support of the PTO, our ninth, tenth, and eleventh graders experienced Dr. Mykee Fowlin, an actor and psychologist whose performance entitled "You Don't Know Me Until You Know Me" wowed all.  My hope is that you will check in with your students to hear what they thought of Dr. Mykee.

   - What in Dr. Mykee's performance most resonated for them?
   - What was hard about his performance and message?
   - How does it affect how they view the beginning of school, whether they are new to BHS or are returning?

The twelfth graders had an assembly of their own, having seen Dr. Mykee earlier in their BHS career.  Deans Scott Butchart and Brian Poon emphasized the need to enjoy senior year and to see themselves as school and community leaders. I popped in for a little while, and probably embarrassed myself by co-leading a "This Is Our House" chant with Superfan Henry Sher.  I may have been a little overzealous....

I look forward to seeing many of you at the ninth grade PTO meeting this Thursday 9/8 at 7 in our auditorium.  We have the rest of the class meetings sprinkled throughout the remainder of the month, and I will present briefly at each.

Happy Labor Day and see you soon,

Anthony
