Dear BHS Parents, Guardians, and Caregivers,

After two good weeks of Brookline High School, I write with a couple important event previews over the next few weeks. Opportunities to see, hear about, and interact with your students’ high school can seem rare, so engage when and how you can. To that end, we will share the link to our BHS Info Book in a BlackBoard message to all BHS families tomorrow, Monday 9/19.

Junior Parent/Guardian PTO Meeting, Tuesday 9/20, 6:30-8:30pm
The junior class PTO meeting is happening in the Robert and Dubbs Auditorium. I’ll offer some brief words of welcome and Summer Williams, Dean of Students for Grades 11 and 12, will discuss how we are supporting juniors in an important year at old BHS. Afterwards, there will reportedly be a gathering of junior parents and guardians at Garrison House in Brookline Village.

BHS Innovation Fund - 9th Grade Parent Wine and Cheese Social, Thursday 9/29, 5:30-7:30pm
The Brookline High School Innovation Fund hosts this yearly event for ninth grade parents, guardians, and caregivers. The Wine and Cheese Social is less about wine and cheese and more about coming together as a community to conspire in caring for, challenging, and helping our newest students acculturate to BHS. This is a big place with myriad opportunities for young people. Guiding the youth as they begin can be particularly stressful. Next Thursday’s event will provide space for meeting others who are in on the earnest conspiracy and are good company.

The Wine and Cheese Social also provides a glimpse of the BHS Innovation Fund’s impact. The Fund supports BHS educators in developing innovative courses, curricula, and programming for our students. This year alone, the Fund is supporting a Social Emotional Learning Tutorial (SELT) pilot, a Data Science for Social Justice math course, a Re-imagining the Restaurant program, a Climate Science and Social Solutions interdisciplinary course, an Innovation Fellow course release, and the final year of our Hub/Advisory program roll-out.

Back to School Night, Thursday 10/6, - 6:30-9:00pm
This is our signature home-school partnership event. You will follow your student’s schedule, traveling in their figurative shoes from class to class. You will marvel at how they move about our campus and at the Brookline High School educators who teach and work with your kids every day. Assistant Head of School Hal Mason and I will send out more details shortly. For now, reserve from 6:30 to 9pm and plan not to park at BHS that evening.

Have a nice Sunday. We have a full week of school then transition into three weeks of shortened weeks for Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

Sincerely,

Anthony

BHS Upcoming / Ongoing

SENIOR COLLEGE ESSAY WRITING WORKSHOP - OCT. 2ND

Registration for The Senior College Essay Writing Workshop is LIVE! The workshop will take place on Sunday, October 2, 2022, at BHS from 9:00 a.m. – 12:30 pm. This is a traditional BHS event open to BHS seniors at every stage of their college essay process. Students will have the chance to work with BHS teachers and parent/adult volunteers to move from ideas, to outlines, editing, and finished essays for their college applications. Please note that only seniors may participate. Click HERE to register.

We are also looking for parent/adult volunteers now to fill several roles. We encourage parents who have children in all grades to come join the crew. We are principally looking for folks who would be interested in the following roles (we usually have more than one person in each role):
1. Event day registration and logistics;
2. Parent/adults who are writers, editors, or are comfortable assisting students with writing.

If you are interested in these roles (or have other questions), please contact Liz Stillman (estillman@suffolk.edu) or Beth Jones (beth.jones7@gmail.com).

TEACHER APPRECIATION BREAKFAST - OCT. 7th

The PTO will be serving breakfast to the teachers the morning following Back To School Night to thank them for their time the previous evening. Watch your email and next week's Blast for a link to sign up to contribute a breakfast item or to volunteer to help out!

B-PEN (Brookline Parent Education Network) BACK TO SCHOOL INFO

For kids as well as parents, the “back to school” transition is one of life’s most anticipated – whether with anxiety, eager excitement, or a little of both. And most of us are still feeling a lot of uncertainty – from the day-to-day challenges of new schools/classrooms/teachers/peers to the bigger issues of today’s complicated world. Families will do well to take a deep collective breath before diving in, and as we go, keep social/emotional health front and center. Brookline Parent Education Network (B-PEN) can help. B-PEN’s “Transitions” page offers a wide variety of tip sheets and resources to help families get off to a good start.

FOPA (Friends of Performing Arts) - JOIN US!

You are invited to become a part of the Friends of Performing Arts at Brookline High School.  Families, faculty and administrators work together to support and advance performing arts activities at the high school through event assistance, grants and outreach.
Why volunteer?  Because over 650 students engage with and benefit from the vibrant curriculum and performance opportunities at BHS, and they rely on parents to partner with them in a wide range of artistic pursuits.  Plus, it’s a fun way to meet other parents and contribute to the creative culture at BHS!

For more information about FoPA at Brookline High, or to volunteer, please contact Florrie Ives at brooklinefopa@gmail.com, or visit our website HERE.
