This Week At BHS

WINTER SPORTS DEADLINE IS MONDAY! There are 386 students already signed up and ready to participate in winter tryouts beginning on November 28th.  The deadline to register online and submit your paperwork is November 21st.  Sport options this winter include: Basketball, Cheer, Fencing, Gymnastics, Ice Hockey, Indoor Track, Skiing, Squash, Boys Swimming+Diving, and Wrestling.

GIRLS POWDERPUFF GAME Wednesday, November 23rd beginning approximately at 1:30 pm. Female athletes from the senior class, face the same from the junior class, for a game of flag-football, in this annual BHS tradition. The game will be played on Parsons field (Kent street), in Brookline, following a (student only) pep rally at the high school. Class of 2017 attendees and fans will be in blue, Class of 2018 will be in red. Kick off the Thanksgiving holiday by attending this spirited event!

THANKSGIVING BREAK On Wednesday, November 23rd students will be released at 12:15. School resumes on Monday, November 28th.

THANKSGIVING TRADITION CONTINUES Our Football Warriors head to Newton North on Thanksgiving morning to take on the Tigers, beginning at 10am. This special game was first played in 1894 and is one of the longest running high school football rivalries in America. Be sure to support and congratulate our Cheerleading teams, as they were honored with the MSSAA Community Service Award. Stay true to Red and Blue!

BHS SWIM/DIVE ALUMNI MEET Join current and former BHS swimmers and divers for a festive afternoon of friendly races and dives. This event aims to raise $3000 for a new BHS records board, in honor of legendary Brookline swim coach Jim Locke. Refreshments will be available.  Saturday, November 26 from 12:30 - 3:00 pm at the Evelyn Kirrane pool, 60 Tappan Street.  Contact Jane Piercy for more information.

IMPROVISED MUSIC FESTIVAL Friday, December 2nd, 7:30pm – 9:30pm in the Roberts/Dubbs Auditorium

BHS FRESHMAN PLAY "The Phantom TollBooth" will be performed on Wednesday, December 7, 3:30 pm, Thursday, December 8 & Friday, December 9, 7:30 pm, Saturday December 10, 3:30 pm & 7:30 pm in The Black Box theater.

WINTER CONCERT Friday December 16, 7:30 pm in the Roberts/Dubbs Auditorium.

BASIC RIGHTS IN SPECIAL EDUCATION Monday, November 21, 2016 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM in Town Hall, Room 111. Presentation of basic rights under state and federal laws. This workshop is mandated by state law to be offered at least once a year.

SCHOOL POLICIES UNDER REVIEW The Brookline School Committee, through its Subcommittee on Policy Review, regularly reviews and, when necessary, revises or creates written policies governing the Public Schools of Brookline (PSB). In an effort to improve public feedback on policy revisions, the proposed draft of any policy under review is posted on the Public Schools website when it is approved for a First Reading by the full School Committee. MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID TRAINING The Brookline Parent Education Network, in conjunction with Wayside Youth and Family Support Networks, is hosting a Mental Health First Aid Training to teach how to follow an action plan to help a young person that may be experiencing a mental health issue or substance abuse problem. The training will take place at the Brookline Public Health Department on December 5th and 7th. Click here for more information or to register for the training.

LET'S TALK! This series focuses on fostering the success and well-being of Asian and Asian-American youth. Topics will cover how to understand the various challenges your child may face in school, social-emotional development, and promoting well-being. This event is free and will be held on Thursday, December 8, 2016 at 361 Washington St, Hunneman Hall, 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. Please RSVP here. Contact Chris Chanyasulkit for more information. METCO JAZZ BRUNCH at the Marriott in Quincy, MA on Sunday, Dec 11, 2016 from 10:30 am - 2:30 pm. The brunch is a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the METCO program, sponsored by METCO Incorporated. Tickets/Donation $65, more information may be found here.
