From the BHS Headmaster
Dear BHS Parents and Guardians,
This week we moved from opening assemblies, introductory classes, and a fire drill(!) to the sacred work of Brookline High: learning and teaching, being and becoming.
Just as you might be orienting yourself to a new school and/or a new year, your students are finding their footing in new classes with new teachers and new peers. I write this week with a couple thoughts on this process, especially how we can work together to support our students.
Regardless of age or program, all of our students are learning the rituals and expectations of their teachers, courses, and academic program more generally. This process probably reveals itself in various comments about the seeming ease or difficulty of teachers and coursework. We are hearing confidence, doubt, overconfidence, and anxiety.
Such observations and interpretations are natural, fine, and maybe good. As adults, we know it is more important that our students think about the ramifications for their habits and rituals around work. We know about growth mindset: that being smart entails embracing hard work over time. Our Warriors should be establishing the appropriate habits and approaches for their academic programs and extracurricular commitments.
As you figure out the right distance at which to work with your student(s). here are two important dates:
- First quarter ends on Monday November 7th; report cards come out a week later.
- Interim Progress Reports - mid-quarter feedback - come out on October 6th.
My advice is that you help your student(s) establish good habits and systems and have them set some goals for first quarter. In less than a month, you will see teacher feedback that can spur necessary adjustments. We at BHS will work hard to help foster these same habits and systems and to give our students the feedback they need and deserve to grow and learn, to be and become.
I hope to see you at an upcoming PTO meeting.
PS - More on fall sports soon, though our Warriors are in action: on fields, courts, and courses and in pools throughout the Metrowest. Keep up on the Warriors website
