Hello, fellow BHS families, and welcome to the 2022-23 school year and to the first PTO Weekly Blast of the year! We are your PTO co-presidents, Carin and Jennie (parents to kids in the classes of ‘24 and ‘26), and we look forward to an enjoyable, productive school year together. The PTO leadership, which includes officers (co-presidents, treasurer, secretary), representatives for each class, liaisons from BHS programs, faculty representatives, and a fundraising team, meets monthly. Our mission is two-fold:

  • to facilitate communication between school and home (through regular meetings with administration and staff, regular emails home from class reps and co-presidents, class-specific parent meetings, and this weekly email update)

  • to raise funds that enrich the educational experience at BHS through grants and discretionary funds to faculty and support for annual special events like film and speaker series; music, dance, and poetry programs; the Senior Essay Writing Workshop; Junior Semiformal; After the Prom Party; Freshman Welcome… the list goes on.

As the parent or caregiver of a BHS student, you are automatically a member of the PTO! We hope we’ll hear from you frequently with questions, ideas, suggestions, and yes… donations! Please feel free to email the co-presidents anytime. You will be hearing from us quite a bit as the school year begins and we have updates on important events (e.g., Back to School Night, Senior Essay Writing Workshop, class-specific parent meetings). If you’re interested in stepping into a leadership role, please reach out to us - we have openings for fundraising co-chairs as well as a third co-president.

This year in particular, it is a central goal of the PTO to enhance and increase opportunities for connection among the parent/caregiver community. The COVID years have been tough on all of us, and we need this connection now more than ever. So please watch your email for information on opportunities to get together, and let us know if you have suggestions for ways to strengthen the community as the year goes on.

Have a great first day of school tomorrow (8am for 9th graders; 9am for 10th-12th graders new to BHS; 10am for returning 10th-12th graders!), and thank you for reading and for supporting your PTO!

AAPI BOOK FUNDRAISING DRIVE

Our Asian and Asian American students at Brookline High School are HUNGRY for BOOKS! Books by Asian American and Pacific Islander authors. Books about AAPI stories and history.

Please join BAAFN (Brookline Asian American Family Network) in creating this "BIG EFFECT" in our community. We hope we can count on you to contribute to the GoFundMe campaign for the AAPI Book Fund for BHS. The AAPI Book Collection is dedicated in honor of Ms. Lihua Zhang Shorter, beloved BHS Chinese Teacher who will be retiring this coming October. Thank you, Ms. Shorter, for giving our students so much love, guidance and inspiration for 25 years!

BHS Upcoming / Ongoing

SENIOR COLLEGE ESSAY WRITING WORKSHOP - OCT. 2ND

The Senior College Essay Writing Workshop will take place on Sunday, October 2, 2022, at BHS from 9:30 a.m. – 1:30 pm (time may change slightly). This is a traditional BHS event open to BHS seniors at every stage of their college essay process. Students will have the chance to work with BHS teachers and parent volunteers to move from ideas, to outlines, editing, and finished essays for their college applications. We will have registration links and information for both seniors and parent volunteers available in the next week. Please note that only seniors may participate.

We are also looking for parents to volunteer now to fill several roles. We would especially invite parents who have freshmen, sophomores, and juniors to come join the crew. We are principally looking for folks who would be interested in the following roles (we usually have more than one person in each role): overall coordination, event day registration, communications, and volunteer coordination. Of course, any organizational help would be welcomed. If you are interested in these roles (or have other questions), please contact Liz Stillman (estillman@suffolk.edu) or Beth Jones (beth.jones7@gmail.com).
