Welcome, Pastor McGuire!

Or we should say, "welcome back!"
Many of you know Pastor McGuire, who was with us several years ago as an interim pastor. The first question is often on his name. Padraig is Irish for Patrick (translates to Peter). Pastor McGuire began using this traditional Irish spelling of his first name after the death of his father and namesake to give him honor. Say "Patrick" and you have it! (We also give a shout-out to his lovely mother, pictured here with Pastor Padraig.)

As further background, Pastor McGuire was ordained an minister in the ELCA in 1995, and has served a number of congregations throughout the Metro Chicago Synod over the last fifteen years – interim pastor, regularly called pastor, parochial school teacher and cantor/musician. Pastor is a trained musician and brings this gift to his ministry. He also holds Master of Theological Studies and Master of Divinity Degrees.

His ministry in a sentence:  To bring light and hope to the place we find ourselves in Jesus' name..
Journey in Pictures...

You Are Cordially Invited to Sunday School!

  • Drop In When You Can
About Sunday School...
Sunday School Activities are available during Sunday worship service.  At 9:30 a.m. families start worship together in church. After the Children's Message (at about 9:45 a.m.), children are invited to take part in Sunday School activities. Children are escorted back to the church in time for Communion/Blessing and then finish worship with you. Of course, children are welcome to stay in church for the entire worship service – we are a very informal, energetic, family-friendly group. Feel free to join us any Sunday you are free.

Would you like to lend a hand? Please contact Education Director Jodi Jost, jostjodi@att.net.
We Lift Up our PreSchool Students, Families and Staff!
The year has started off wonderfully. Thank you to our families and staff for being part of the Christ Lutheran family. We hold you all in prayer.

ANNOUNCEMENTS!
Visit our website for more info on all of these activities.

With all ministries, please do not feel pressured to give time, talent or resources. We offer these opportunities as ways that we as a community of Christ can use our blessings to bless others. That said, the most important offering you can give is your prayers. Thank you.

Empty Bowls Soup Supper – October 25
Sunday, Oct. 25 from 5 to 7:30 to help our neighbors

Empty Bowls is a grassroots effort to end hunger on a local basis. We will host an Empty Bowls soup supper on Sunday, October 25 from 5 yo 7:30 p.m. (there is no Bears game that day!). All proceeds will go to the COOl and Township food pantries. Cost is $10 per person (children 5 and under free), for which you receive a meal, a hand-painted bowl and the joy of helping our neighbors. Interested in helping? Please contact Penni Sauer (penry4@gmail.com). More information about the effort is at www.emptybowls.net

COOL Ministries Collection – Bars of Soap
Collection baskets are under the church mailboxes
COOL Ministries was founded by a group of Lutheran churches in Waukegan/North Chicago to provide food, clothing, shelter and job training. Each month we collect items for their clients. In September we are collecting bars of soap – or any nonperishable you feel called to contribute. Thanks to Rob Jost for delivering our donations.

Consider Manna Shopping Cards
A portion comes back to support our ministries

Whether you buy groceries at Jewel, gas at Shell, or clothing at Macy's – we've got a Manna Scrip shopping card for you! Please check out the dozens of local vendors who participate in this program designed to support nonprofit groups – for every dollar you spend our ministries receive 2 to 25 percent back! Check the Favorite Vendors List, which is posted on our church website under "News and Events." Orders using a paper form and a check made out to Christ Lutheran will be turned in twice each month. Cards are delivered to church within a week. You can also go online any time to place an order, including some instant certificates that you can print immediately from your home computer. (Please note that Manna reports some outages on the eScrip online program - so if you are having trouble, it could be the system.) Online orders require you to set up a log in and payment account, but once you are set up, it is so easy to do. Then, instead of taking cash or a credit card to the grocery store, you can use the shopping card! Our organization number is 2384. Contact Penni Sauer (penry4@gmail.com) to receive your family log in code and for further assistance. And thanks, Penni, for your work on this project.

Thanks for Christ Luther-palooza I!
Good Time Had by All.
Thanks to all who set up, cooked, brought, greeted, ate, cleaned up and enjoyed our celebration on Sunday, August 30. We blessed backpacks, installed teachers, hosted families at the annual PreSchool Open House and enjoyed a wonderful picnic. Thank you to Pastor Fred Rajan for leading us in worship.

We Support "Rebuild the Churches"
Interfaith Community Reaches Out

We support our brothers and sisters in Christ in the rebuilding of sanctuaries that have been demolished by suspicious fires and other attacks. Through the Rebuild the Chuches Fund, we join dozens of other interfaith communities – Jewish, Christian and Muslim – who have pledged support. If you wish to contribute, Christ Lutheran will deliver your donation. Or contact fund organizer Dean Kinman directly at mkinman@gmail.com. More information is on one of our Facebook pages – Rebuild the Churches.

Bethel Book Drive Expands to CDs and DVDs
Collection Bin is Under the Mailboxes

One of the ministries we support is Bethel New Life, a non-profit organization formed by a small Lutheran church on the West Side of Chicago. Bethel works on a variety of initiatives to support the people of their beleaguered neighborhoods, helping with everything from affordable housing to youth intervention to job training. A huge part of the Bethel ministry is parent education and early childhood learning. With that in mind, Bethel greatly appreciates our donations of gently used (or new) children's books. Bethel also distributes regular books through their senior center. They have recently let us know that they would appreciate CDs and DVDs as well. If you have some material that you would like to contribute, Bethel will be happy to have it. Our collection is ongoing – the bin is under the mailboxes in the hallway. For more information about Bethel, visit www.bethelnewlife.org.
