Prescription Drugs and Poison Control
Excerpt from the September 2016 TSBDE Newsletter
"Within the last decade, abuse and misuse of certain prescription drugs, especially pain medications, has become prevalent. Studies have indicated that educating health care providers about the growing problem and providing them with information will create a heightened awareness of the appropriate use of pain medication as well as the misuses and diversion of addictive pain medications. Visit the Texas State Board of Pharmacy for information on:
- prescribing and dispensing pain medications
- abusive and addictive behavior of certain persons who use prescription pain medications
- common diversion strategies employed by certain persons who use prescription pain medications, including fraudulent patterns
- the appropriate use of pain medications and the difference between addiction, pseudo-addiction, tolerance, and physical dependence
- information regarding the services provided by poison control centers"

Substance abuse, in essence, “hijacks the brain” leading the abuser down a harmful path of oral health and whole body destruction. Published evidence on oral complications related to substance abuse emphasizes that oral health care at various levels including education, prevention, and treatment should be integrated into general care services for addicts. This life changing, brutally honest program will give you the tools and information to effectively recognize the signs and symptoms of, as well as how to treat, the drug abusing patient. It will empower you to make a significant difference in their lives!
