SB430/HB1201

Local Anesthesia Bill for Dental Hygienists

This bill allows dentists in Texas to delegate to dental hygienists the administration of local anesthesia. This is the standard of care in 44 other states, the District of Columbia and the United States Military.

This bill requires that any hygienist administering local anesthesia will have to be properly educated and trained. It requires that practicing hygienists will have to take a classroom course (number of hours to be determined by the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners) and that dental hygiene education programs will increase the hours in their curricula to include the clinical portion of local anesthesia administration.

It is time for our state to allow hygienists to be educated to the same level as most other states. Please write your legislator and ask them to support Senate Bill 430 or HB 1201. To find out who your State Senator or Representative is please visit http://www.fyi.legis.state.tx.us/Home.aspx. To stay informed on the status of these bills please visit Texas Legislature Online

ADA Health Policy Institute
Creates New Tool to Measure Access

Existing approaches to measuring access to dental care providers have significant shortcomings. The Health Policy Institute recently completed a two-year effort to develop a new approach to measuring access to dental care providers. This approach geo-locates all Medicaid providers and uses geoanalytics to measure proximity of Medicaid providers to Medicaid beneficiaries. The analysis is highly actionable for policymakers, identifying “hotspots” of insufficient access that could be addressed through targeted reforms. See the journal article summarizing methods here.
