Selah Downtown Association Sponsors Community Giving Tree

Selah, WA, December 13, 2016 -- Selah Downtown Association (SDA) announced today the successful completion of their "Community Giving Tree" project.

Selah's "Community Giving Tree" was sponsored by SDA through the Selah School District and sought to provide holiday gifts for 35 children from 10 local families. SDA hosted two Giving Trees in downtown Selah at the Selah Civic Center and City Hall building. The organization invited members of the public to "adopt" a child from the tree and purchase a gift for that child.

"We wanted people to get excited about this project and get involved," said SDA executive director Whitney Stohr. "I'm always asked by people how they can donate items and 'give back' to the community, and this is one, really fun way to do that."

The Giving Tree program ran in downtown Selah from mid-November through December 12, 2016. SDA asked that all gifts be returned to Selah City Hall to be sorted and dropped-off at the Selah School District by December 13th.

SDA volunteers incorporated the Giving Tree program into the organization's final Second Saturday activities on November 12th, coming together that day to decorate the trees and launch the project. SDA's "Second Saturdays in Downtown Selah" is an ongoing, community-wide program that brings events to downtown Selah on a monthly basis.

"Our mission is to improve downtown Selah and one way we do that is by providing opportunities for community engagement," said Stohr. "As an organization, we want to have a social impact and do something meaningful for this community."

Stohr was quick to recognize how generous people were in their giving. She was also pleased to see so many parents and grandparents using the Giving Tree as a learning experience for the children in their families. She mentioned that many people spoke with her about taking their children shopping for gifts and discussing with them the importance of helping others in their community.
"People get really excited about this type of program," said Stohr. "Everyone wants kids to have a nice Christmas, and that showed when they came to City Hall to drop off their gifts. They all had the biggest smiles! So did I."
Selah Downtown Association is a community organization working to revitalize downtown Selah, and promote the downtown business district as the community's social, cultural and economic center.
