Message from the Board Chair

There is a great deal of work in progress at the North Shore Division.

Your Division has been very busy working on the implementation of the Primary Care Home. The first iteration of this project is about to launch, under the physician leadership of Dr. Dean Brown. Work with Vancouver Coastal Health Authority has been collaborative and fruitful, and the development of work flow processes for this project is well under way. A Network learning session was held on April 4.

Check out our new Recruitment and Retention video to see a few familiar faces!

GP Link, the phone link at the Division office to find primary care physicians for unattached patients, is in full swing, with a roll out to the general population. Numbers of patients who have found a family doctor are steadily increasing.

Pathways has been well received. Over one hundred GPs have accessed 24,634 “page views”.

The year will be a busy, active, and rewarding  one. Visit our website, where you will find a wealth of information to bring you up to date on North Shore initiatives.

We would however like to remind members there is a cost to the Division to host these events, some of which can be saved if we know in advance whether members will attend or not. Over the past year, 76 members did not attend at least one event they were registered for, with a total of over 100 no shows.

We would appreciate if you could please give us a minimum of 2 days' notice so we can minimize event expenses, and ensure our resources continue to go into initiatives that benefit members and patients.

Child and Youth Mental Health and Substance Use Collaborative: Legacy Magazine

Legacy: Progress of the Child and Youth Mental Health and Substance Use (CYMHSU) Collaborative - This magazine tells the story of the CYMHSU Collaborative – how it grew from a small initiative in the interior in the Spring of 2013 to encompass communities in all five health regions in BC today.

The magazine details the diverse activities under the Collaborative umbrella through engaging stories and pictures. Learn about:

  • Mental health literacy events and projects held in communities to increase access and reduce stigma
  • How collaboration creates clearer pathways to care, and
  • How communities increase their capacity to respond to the mental health and substance use needs of their young people and their families.
For questions regarding the CYMHSU work on the North Shore, please contact cito@divisionsbc.ca.

GP Link Helps Physicians Round Out Their Patient Panels

Four times a year, we invite North Shore family physicians to accept unattached patients through GP Link, a service that patients access by calling 778-945-3017. The next time you receive the “GP Link Registry Update” email, please consider joining this important program. You can specify an interest in accepting patients with certain conditions, and you can remove yourself from GP Link at any time. Patients will be asked to gather key information (e.g. current medications) before contacting you. If you accept complex/high needs patients through GP Link, you can bill G14074 ($200) for eligible patients (frail, significant cancer, complex chronic conditions, severe disability in the community, mental health and/or substance use, or new mothers and infants).

•    How many patients has GP Link helped so far?
•    How quickly do most GP Link callers receive a response?
•    What complex/high needs do patients have?
•    Are callers seeking a GP for themselves or others?
•    How many patients does each caller represent?
•    How do callers discover GP Link?

HealthConnection App Update

Dear HealthConnection App Users:

Thank you for using our free, searchable directory of resources to help North Shore residents manage their health and chronic conditions. We have some updates to share with you.

The HealthConnection App has been removed from the iPhone App Store as technical upgrades to the app was discontinued. For now, people who currently have the HealthConnection App on their iPhones will still be able to use it, and the data will be updated whenever we update the HealthConnection website. Over time, however, the lack of technical upgrades will make the app incompatible with the newest version of iOS. Users may start to see glitches, and will eventually be unable to access the app at all. When this happens, you can simply switch to using the HealthConnection website through a web browser.

We will continue to maintain the HealthConnection website, which allows you to access the same searchable directory through any web browser.

We really appreciate your interest in health resources on the North Shore. We look forward to continuing to share information with you through our website! If you have any questions or concerns, please email nscds@vch.ca.

Sincerely,
Vancouver Coastal Health and the North Shore Division of Family Practice

2016 Tax Changes Affect Some Incorporated Doctors

Changes to tax rules in 2016 could affect incorporated physicians who work with other physicians in group practices. MD Financial Management has created several information pages to help physicians determine whether these changes will impact their practices:
•    How 2016 tax changes affect some incorporated physicians
•    Federal budget implications for incorporated physicians (webinar video)
•    Incorporated physicians: Are you affected by the 2016 federal budget?

DTO Update: Increase in Ransomware Cyberattacks Targeting doctors

There has been an increase in reports from doctors about attacks by ransomware, a type of malware that often involves compromised system security, temporary or permanent loss of information, and extortion of money from users. Because antivirus software does not provide sufficient protection from ransomware, doctors are encouraged to seek alternative solutions. For more detailed information about ransomware and suggestions for dealing with an attack, read “Ransomware – What should I do?”, a technical bulletin by Doctors Technology Office (DTO). Further resources related to technical issues affecting physicians are available on the DTO technical bulletins.
