MISSION UPDATE

The 4th of July celebrations kicked off the summer season and everyone is getting distracted as life is starting to speed up, again. Let’s take a trip around the world to see some examples of people celebrating our relationship with animals. Festivals or ingenuity can be fun after the year we've had. So please, let's be safe and protect those part of our communities who are immune compromised. Our country's coronavirus stats continue to vary state-by-state (click for Delta variant tracker in your area). Current 1 FUR 1's animal assisted programs reflect that reality. For example, our Midwest animal assisted activity program which works with therapy dogs in schools to help young adults with disabilities, is still suspended. ANIMAL ASSISTED ACTIVITY

Even before the pandemic a mental health crisis has been brewing, from young people struggling with various disorders to veterans living with PTSD. See our latest blog on the mental health crisis in our country. Therefore, 1 FUR 1 animal assisted activity programs welcomed a new partner this year focused on helping nurses, fire fighters, doctors and cops across TN, SC and NC. ANIMAL ASSISTED THERAPY

There are many health benefits of animal assisted therapy (AAT), from young people struggling with Autism to victims of crime. The most recent CDC report states; Younger adults, racial/ethnic minorities, essential workers, and unpaid adult caregivers reported having experienced disproportionately worse mental health outcomes, increased substance use, and elevated suicidal ideation. Our animal assisted therapy programs have helped more than 13,200 children with disabilities and crime victims over the past 5 years.
