foundation update
The seeds sown at the MMS Foundation launch as guest speaker Rosemary Addis enlightening us with her insights as a recognised global leader in social innovation and investment sprouted with the launch of the Melbourne Montessori School Community Finance Fund this year.  The MMS Foundation was instrumental in the strategic development of the MMS CFF with $1.8M invested in our School to finance the purchase of the Brighton Campus and adjoining Brighleigh Uniting Church property and grounds.

This innovative social investment establishes our School as one of the first in Australia to implement a successful social/impact investment to fund capital investment.
The MMS Foundation Project Team, originally tasked with establishing and launching the MMS Foundation, became redundant during the year.  Since our first meeting in 2010 many parents have generously contributed time and energy from the early conceptual stage to practical reality.  A heartfelt thank you to Kate Caldecott, Elli Bardas, Simone Chin, Kathryn Buchanan, Michael Phan, Hali Haphen, Vivian O’Shannessy, Alex Molnar, Heico Wesselius, Kym Yates, Tiziana Princi, Irena Bukhstaber and Gary Tramer for their contribution.

The Building Fund Levy raised $80,908 in 2015 with 54% of families supporting the tax-deductible Building Fund Levy.  This Levy contributes to the loan repayments on the Brighton Campus.  It is a simple and important way to support the School as the Levy is included with the fee instalments.

The inaugural MMS Alumni & Graduates morning tea was held during the last week of school. The Caulfield Campus was buzzing with excitement as our MMS Alumni Graduates 2010, having just completed Year 11, ventured back to school.  They spent the morning touring the Caulfield Campus and sharing their experiences at Senior School with our Grads.   They remembered the old house that was replaced with the current Cycle 2 classrooms and administration block in 2005 and much smaller playground spaces!  Insightful questions were asked and our wonderful Alumni all commented that their Montessori education set them on a great path in Senior School.  Current students could only imagine whether one day they might grow to be so tall or follow their passion for computer gaming design after school.

This inspiring group of young adults continue to be wonderful MMS Ambassadors and we wish them all the best with their Year 12 studies next year.

master plan update
During the year the MMS Building and Grounds Committee has spent an enormous amount of time mapping out the requirements of the School over the next 10 years.  Each year, as the Junior School reaches capacity and the Senior School grows, the needs of students and teachers have been considered to finalise the 10-year Master Plan and the associated logistics.  The 10-year Master Plan is now 95% complete.  A recent pre-planning meeting with Bayside Council will provide feedback as the outstanding issues are resolved and the plan finalised.

Once the 10-year Master Plan is complete it will be presented to the MMS Community, although the basic footprint remains unchanged from the Master Plan unveiled at the MMS Foundation Launch last year.

Over the summer holidays, and just in time for the new school year, Stage 2 works will be completed at the Brighton Campus.  These works focus on supporting the growth of the Senior School with the introduction of Year 8 in 2016 and a Cycle 4 classroom of 28 students:
  • Cycle 4 Kitchen extension and reconfiguration to incorporate two preparation & cooking areas
  • Cycle 4 Staff Room and Breakout space to be relocated to existing library space
  • Cycle 4 bathrooms to be relocated into the centre of the Church Hall Building
Early in 2016 the Brighton Campus Staff room will be extended to accommodate the increasing number of staff at this campus.  The existing Staff room will extend to Room 2 and be reconfigured to include a meeting space and desk area.
