Edition 5 - March 2017

Welcome to the latest edition of the Melbourne Montessori School Foundation and Master Plan Newsletter.  You may have noticed the timing of this newsletter is a little later than usual?

In response to feedback from our community the biannual newsletter dates have changed to March and September - now arriving into your inbox in term rather than during the busy school holidays.

This edition contains news about the building works conducted over the summer holidays at the Caulfield Campus, our exciting Term 1 building works at the Brighton Campus plus an update on the MMS Master Plan and MMS Foundation.

I look forward to sharing with you another exciting year at Melbourne Montessori School.

Warmest Regards,

LJ Ryan
Chair, Melbourne Montessori School Foundation

foundation update
The Melbourne Montessori School Foundation Board and Melbourne Montessori School Board have both approved and endorsed the MMS Capital Campaign Strategy, a fundraising initiative that will support the redevelopment of both the Brighton and Caulfield Campuses as outlined in the MMS 10-year Master Plan.  There will be more information about this exciting fundraising initiative, a first for our school community, once the MMS 10-year Master Plan is finalised.

In 2016, the Building Fund Levy raised $91,395 with 57% of families supporting the tax-deductible Building Fund Levy.  The number of families and monetary value raised by this levy continues to increase.  This Levy contributes to the loan repayments on the Brighton Campus and the maintenance of our existing buildings.  It is a simple and important way to support the School as the Levy is included with each fee instalment and is tax-deductible.

Our School is forever grateful to the families that have supported the tax-deductible Building Fund Levy this year and the past families, who through 43 years of generosity, created the facilities our students and staff enjoy today.  Our goal is to achieve 80% of families supporting this Levy.

The second MMS Alumni & Graduates event was held during the last week of school, in Term 4 2016. We welcomed back Hannah and Wren, both graduates from 2011, having just completed Year 11. This year parents were also invited and it was lovely to catch up with Katherine and Tracy, one parent an ex-Board Member and the other a founder of the Parents Association.

As part of the Foundation's strategy to reconnect with our Alumni, Candice Jansz - MMS Community Engagement Manager, joined our community last year and amongst her first tasks will be a reconnection and engagement strategy with our MMS Alumni - students, parents and staff.  If you have information, contact details, or are a MMS Alumni and would like to share your news with us, please contact us at alumni@mms.vic.edu.au

master plan update
Since the purchase of the Brighton Campus in 2014 the focus of the MMS Building & Grounds Committee has been the Brighton redevelopment.  Most recently our attention turned to the Caulfield Campus and providing the facilities to accommodate our Cycle Two and Cycle Three students with our full capacity of eight classrooms commencing Term 1, 2017.

During the final weeks of last year, the installation of a temporary classroom space to accommodate a new staff room, administration offices, LDU and separate computer lab commenced.   The existing staff room (previously a Cycle 1 room) was converted back into a classroom to house a Cycle 3 class.  The existing building was given a much-needed update with new carpet, a fresh coat of paint, new material making/photocopying area and bathrooms.  It's wonderful to see the students and staff enjoying these new facilities.

A landscaping plan to enhance the grounds of the Caulfield Campus has been developed and works have commenced to coincide with Open Day on Saturday, 18th March. Other recent works include creating a ‘mound’ from excess dirt due to the temporary classroom construction and landscaping along the Larch Street boundary.

At the Brighton Campus, our Senior School continues to grow with forty-five students from Years 7 to 9 and six staff members.  Additional learning spaces are required to accommodate this growth. A temporary classroom building will be installed along the southern boundary, abutting the current ‘Tree House’, to provide new learning spaces and staff facilities.   Building works commenced last week and the new learning spaces will be available from Term 2.

The Melbourne Montessori School 10-year Master Plan architectural designs, for both the Brighton & Caulfield Campuses, have been placed on hold whilst awaiting a VCAT hearing to resolve the current planning application with Bayside Council. More news regarding the MMS 10-year Master Plan will be available later in the year.
