Edition 1 -  December 2014

This is the first edition of the Melbourne Montessori School Foundation and Master Plan newsletter.  This biannual newsletter will inform our community of the progress of the School’s Master Plan and the work of the MMS Foundation in supporting the development and implementation of the Master Plan.

Since launching the MMS Foundation and Master Plan to our community in June, both Project Teams have been busy laying the
‘foundations’ to support the long-term vision of our school.

So much has been achieved in 2014 but our journey is only just beginning!  Happy Reading…

Foundation Update

“Growth is not merely a harmonious increase in size but a transformation”
The words of Maria Montessori, which captured the essence of the launch of the MMS Foundation and Master Plan, have guided the work of the Foundation this year.  Fundraising within our community is transforming and with ‘Big Work’ on our agenda for the next 10 years, we are creating a new way of understanding and supporting fundraising.

Previously the Parent Association had driven our fundraising efforts focusing on community events that also raised money to fund items on the School’s Wish List.  The MMS Foundation was established to develop a strategic approach to fundraising connecting current families, Alumni, past parents, friends of MMS, including the broader educational and philanthropic community,   to create opportunities and programs to support the School’s Building Fund, Library Fund and Scholarship Fund.

Next year the Parent Association will continue to run community events and the MMS Foundation will launch fundraising initiatives that will support the ‘Big Work’ that underpins the long-term vision of Melbourne Montessori School.  This vision is a Montessori School of Excellence providing an enriched learning environment for 500 students from birth to adulthood.

The launch of the MMS Foundation in June was a wonderful event that engaged our MMS Community and announced the Federal Government, Capital Grants Program, $500,000 grant towards the purchase of the Brighton campus.

To assist with financing the purchase of the Brighton Campus the tax-deductible Voluntary Building Fund Levy was re-introduced in 2014.  Our School is forever grateful to the 68% of families that have paid the Levy this year and also the past families, who through their generosity, created the facilities our students and staff enjoy today. Our target is to have 80% of families supporting this Levy.

During our 40th Birthday year we have been searching through the archives to establish a database of our Alumni from the Montessori Children’s Centre, Brighton Montessori School, Caulfield Montessori School and Melbourne Montessori School.  Wonderful reconnections have begun and we look forward to establishing Alumni events next year.  If you are an Alumnus or know of an Alumni please contact us at

Master Plan Update

The MMS Master Plan is a 10-year plan to provide the facilities to achieve our vision for the School… the Brighton Campus a Pre-Primary & Primary Montessori School for 350 students and the Caulfield Campus a Senior Montessori School for 150 students.

The first two stages of the MMS Master Plan encompass a period of transition creating facilities to locate Parent & Toddler, Early Learners, Cycle 1 and Cycle 4 at the Brighton Campus and the Caulfield Campus to house Cycle 2 and Cycle 3, with an additional Cycle 2 classroom commencing next year.

Brighton Campus, Cycle 1 & 4
The new Cycle 1 portables will de delivered at the end of the school year and will be installed in the south-facing car parking area.  The Parent & Toddler room will be moved into the Library with this room transformed into a Cycle 1 classroom.  Playground equipment from the Caulfield Campus will be relocated with fencing and landscaping completing new playgrounds.

The Church Hall has been transformed into a Cycle 4 classroom in addition to the installation of the Science and Art portable at the back of the Brighton Campus. During the holidays landscaping and fencing will complete the Stage 1 & 2 works.

Caulfield Campus, Cycle 2 & 3
During the holidays the Art Room will relocate to Room 7 and Eduardo’s Cycle 3 classroom will move downstairs into the Art Room/Library space.   Lisa’s Cycle 2 classroom will move to Room 5 and the new Cycle 2 classroom will be in Room 2.  The Library will move back upstairs and the Staff Room will be located in Room 6.

The existing Cycle 1 playground fences will be removed and the space reconfigured to suit Cycle 2 & 3 children with the relocation of the Cycle 2 playground equipment from Brighton.
