Match Day Behaviour

Firstly, I would like to congratulate the club coaches on their fantastic match day behaviour so far in 2016. We are mid-way through the second quarter of the year and I’m pleased to announce that not only do we have zero (0) club coaches suspended in 2016; and we haven’t even had any club coaches even reported. This is a fantastic start to the year and all coaches should be commended on their behaviour thus far.
As was highlighted at the pre-season Coaches Meetings, the whole league (SMJFL and the 26 Member Clubs) are targeting ZERO suspended coaches for the entire 2016 season. So please ensure that you remain vigilant in your duties as not only a coach but as a role model to the young players within your team. Additionally, please continue to set the behaviour standards for your whole team, which includes not only the players but fellow team officials and parents as well. Anecdotal evidence would suggest that well behaved coaches means well behaved officials, players & parents.

SMJFL Dangerous Tackle Initiative
Thank you to those coaches that have been implementing the Dangerous Tackle Initiative this year. It’s been pleasing to see the initiative implemented and the positive feedback from clubs, coaches, and parents.
This initiative was developed by one of the SMJFL Clubs and has been unanimously supported by the SMJFL and all 26 SMJFL Clubs. The initiative will be a 1-year trial in 2016 with a review to take place post-season with an eye for full-time implementation for 2017 & beyond. While the SMJFL currently has a very low amount of concussions and/or serious injuries, the league firmly believes that this initiative, when applied correctly by Club Coaches, will improve the safety of all players within the competition.
For the full information about the initiative and how it can be applied, please click this link:
Additionally, please refer to the Dangerous Tackles video which is hosted on the SMJFL Coaches Box page. Click through on this link to view the video by Tony Hales:

SMJFL Dangerous Tackles – Reports
As communicated with clubs, the SMJFL is targeting dangerous tackles and unduly rough play. A number of players have been reported this year for dangerous tackles and/or unduly rough play. To reaffirm our position, as the tackler, you have a responsibility to ensure that you tackle in safe and correct manner. Even if you apply a legal tackle, if the player with the ball suffers an injury (such as concussion), then you may be reported and suspended. Additionally, for players that pin the arms of a player with the ball, they have a responsibility to ensure that the tackle is applied safely and does not cause injury or harm to the ball carrier.
The VAFA has a fantastic video resource on dangerous tackles and we encourage all club coaches to show this video and talk this through with their team (both players & parents). The ‘Dangerous Tackles’ video can be found within the SMJFL Coaches’ Box page on the website.
