Girls' Football Update
The Girls' Football Working Party (GFWP) has continued to meet over the off-season and would like to provide the following updates to clubs to assist with planning for the 2017 season:

Frequently Asked Questions
A list of FAQs is available Secretaries' Corner and via the Girls' Football page on the SMJFL website.

Recruitment & Retention Plan
The GFWP has provided a refresh of the Recruitment & Retention Plan first put together a couple of years ago.

Posters & Flyers
Generic posters and flyers are currently being finalised and will be available to all clubs ASAP.

Coach the Coach - Tackling Sessions
The SMJFL will be facilitating two sessions for coaches, particularly of girls' teams, to learn the basics of tackling and how to teach young players who didn't grow up with the game. Further details are still to be confirmed but each session will be conducted by very highly regarded tackling coach, John Donehue on Thursday 2 March & Wednesday 8 March (coaches only need to attend one session).
Whilst the sessions are targeted at girls' coaches, all coaches are encouraged to attend the free sessions.
Reminder - Transfers Open 1 Feb
A reminder that transfers for the 2017 season re-open tomorrow. Any player training with a club must complete the Intention to Transfer Form unless the Transfer is being submitted immediately after they begin training with a new club. In this case (as with all Transfers) the Transfer Form must be completed and actioned by the new club ASAP.
Reminder - Targeted Schools Program
The Target School Program is underway with school clinics being booked for Term 1 for the nine SMJFL clubs that signed up in December 2016.  This program is an important aspect for continuous growth at grass roots feeding into aligned Auskick centres for your club.  There are still available opportunities for SMJFL Clubs in both terms 1 and 2 to participate and expressions of interest must be received by Friday 10 February 2017 to AFL Victoria to coordinate with the local primary schools.  All inquiries to AFL Victoria Regional Manager Gary Brown on or on 0437 959 490.
Further details on the program can be found by clicking here.
Footyweb Club Locator Updates - Action Required
Over the coming weeks the AFL is going to be launching its 2017 promotional campaign ‘Play AFL’ which will provide an updated look to attracting new participants to all levels of the game but in particular into NAB Auskick and junior clubs.

One of the aspects of this campaign will direct those interested to the ‘AFL Club Locator’ which will utilise either GPS or entered postcodes to direct potential players to the possible clubs in their area.
It has been identified that there are numerous clubs in any particular area which are not showing up if these search options are selected and this is due to the club not updating their locator function in Footyweb.
Past experience has shown that that where clubs are not identified on the AFL Community Club map, but their neighbouring clubs are, can result in a significant drop in recruitment and place the sustainability of a club at risk.
Therefore all clubs are encouraged to take a few minutes to go into their Footyweb data management section and ensure that their club is identified correctly under the locator page of the club’s dashboard.
Select locator on the club’s Footyweb dashboard page and go to the bottom of this page to the map. If the identifier tag on the map is not in the correct position drag it to where it should be for your club and save the updated position.
This simple step will ensure that your club shows up whenever a potential player is looking for clubs in your area.

In 2017 the St Kilda Football Club in partnership with the SMJFL will once again be offering complimentary Saints Squad memberships to all registered players within the league.

The program was offered for the first time in 2016 with great success, but since the season wrapped up the Saints have taken the time to make a number of improvements to ensure that all juniors who sign up receive the best possible experience and that the program doesn’t create any additional workload for clubs.

This year all registered players in the SMJFL, regardless of whether you were a Saints Squad member last year or not, can sign up to this completely free program which provides the following benefits:

·        Exclusive Saints Squad membership card and saints squad footy mailed directly to you!
·        Access to 3 Saints home games and the opportunity to purchase guest passes
·        Access to 2 x Captain’s Clinics with the players
·        Special offers and video content

SMJFL players can either sign up by ticking the box on their SMJFL registration form or by visiting
ISC Sample Sets
Matt Nissen our dedicated "Kit Coach" has been touching base with all clubs to ensure they are across the ordering of on-field apparel. He has received many requests for a "Sample Set" of all sizes. Due to demand it won't be possible to send out a set to each club, but a few will be made available at the SMJFL Office for clubs to utilize.

Sample Sets will be available at the SMJFL Office Tuesday 24 January - Friday 3 February (inclusive). It is recommended that clubs arrange a time to come in if they wish to review sizing and compare ISC on-field apparel with any previous suppliers. Times outside of 9-5pm office hours can be made by arrangement.
Training Ball Orders -
If your club ordered Training Balls in December 2016 they have arrived at SMJFL HQ and are available for collection. Please arrange a time with Zoe ( or 9553 5985) for collection, to ensure your order is packed and ready to go!

If required, the next order of training balls will be placed with Sherrin at the end of Febuary. Please use the correct form to place your order -
