The Virginia College Advising Corps (VCAC) & DreamWakers Partner
to Host “Virginia is for Job Lovers: Virtual Commonwealth Career Series”

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA & NEW YORK, NY (January 27, 2017) — Education technology nonprofit DreamWakers is pleased to announce its partnership with the Virginia College Advising Corps (VCAC) to host a virtual discussion series titled: “Virginia is for Job Lovers: Virtual Commonwealth Career Series.” VCAC and DreamWakers will work together from January 27 through June 30, 2017 to host 50 virtual “flashchats” in select high schools across the state of Virginia with the goal of enhancing students’ interests in various career options, while simultaneously preparing them for their undergraduate college studies. A “flashchat” is a 45-minute online session using free video technology such as Google Hangouts that enables students to interact with DreamWakers’ diverse and dynamic speakers. These virtual conversations provide students with meaningful opportunities to think about their personal potential and career possibilities, practice public speaking skills, and gain exposure to new people and opportunities across the Commonwealth, the country, and the world.
DreamWakers and VCAC are bringing their unique missions together to help make college-preparation resources available to thousands of high school students in Virginia. VCAC works to increase the number of first-generation, low-income, and/or underrepresented students who access and complete college.   “We have helped over 20,000 students enroll in post-secondary institutions since 2005, and partnering with DreamWakers allows us to reach a larger scale of students in just 6 months,” said Joy Pugh, Director of the Virginia College Advising Corps. “By participating in these flashchats, the students will get a chance to interface with real-world professionals and gain career advice and inspiration for their own futures.”
DreamWakers will bring their extensive speaker network of vetted volunteers to this series, connecting Virginia classrooms with diverse professionals from organizations such as BuzzFeed, Google, Intel, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA), and The White House, to name a few. Students will have the opportunity ask these "real world" industry experts about topics ranging from new careers in STEM fields to what it is like attending a university as a first-generation college student. “DreamWakers is looking forward to bringing real-life examples and experiences into these Virginia classrooms to inspire students to pursue their dreams in college and beyond,” said DreamWakers Co-Founder and CEO Monica Logothetis. “The U.S. college completion gap has increased by more than fifty percent between affluent and low-income students since the 1980s. Video chat technology allows us to overcome geographic, generational, and economic boundaries to level the playing field for students in Virginia and around the country, and we hope their experience in the coming months leaves them empowered and energized to plan for their bright future."
