How our diet helps our immune system?

The cold and flu season is here.  Already, there have been many catching colds and missing work or school.  I used to be one of those that usually got a really bad cold every year.  I would be in bed for several days and then it would take me at least a week or longer to get back to normal.  I really don't like getting sick and have found a way not to. 

Herbs are nature's medicine.  They will help us get over sickness faster.  Some herbs stimulate the immune system, others are natural antibiotics, antiviral, and antifungal.  Using them rightly help, yet there is nothing that can take the place of good nutrition.  For cold prevention and overall immune strength and function, a good diet is the key.

A Diet for a Strong Immune System 
Experts agree fruits and vegetables are an important part of a healthy diet and a strong immune system. Almost every day, another piece of research or news story comes out about the risk-reducing power of fruits and vegetables. They contain an unparalleled array of nutritional elements that offer numerous health benefits for our bodies – nutrition that we simply can’t get from old-fashioned vitamin pills. The thousands of nutrients found in fruits and vegetables work together in our bodies in ways that science is just beginning to explore. The message is clear: we need more of the healthful whole food nutrition of fruits and vegetables in our diets, every day. The National Cancer Institute and the American Heart Society recommends that we consume 9-13 servings of fruit and vegetables every day for the prevention of cancer, heart disease, and stroke.  The United States government has spent billions trying to find cures for heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and other diseases, their conclusion is as follows:
  • Disease is easier to prevent that to cure.
  • Eat 9-13 servings of fresh raw fruits and vegetables every day.
 So how do you do?  Our family eats healthy, yet we have a hard time getting in nine servings. For example, here's our typical day:  
  • Breakfast - 1 orange, 3 dates, some strawberries a glass  of raw goat milk, maybe some yoghurt = 2 servings fruit
  • Lunch  -  2 big pieces of lettuce, 5 baby carrots, 2 slices of bread with butter, maybe 1/2 advocado or 1/2 cup of squash, some nuts, or eggs = 3 servings veggies
  • Supper - Salad, brown rice, some chicken, 1/2 cup green beans, a glass of kombucha, sweet potato with butter = 3 servings of veggies
  • Total for the day = 8 servings of fruits and vegetables
